Thoughts on no sli with RTX 3080

What do you guys think of the RTX 3080 not having sli compatibility? I currently own a RTX 2080 super and I was planning on upgrading to the RTX 3080 when it released but i'm questioning it because of no sli support. I know sli is not used anymore but I started building computers 6-7 years ago and sli was always the part of the computer that made it unique with performance and looks

Are you using SLI for the 2080 Super? I don't see why you wouldn't upgrade if you aren'y taking advantage of it anyways.

I really can't say it matters anymore. Game developers aren't optimizing for it like they were years ago, so at best it's a one-trick pony for benchmarks.

The negatives from SLI (micro-stuttering, high power consumption, etc.) outweighed the lone positive of slightly better price/performance, and PSUs are really expensive now anyways. I agree with how old SLI systems really looked unique (I had one myself), but it just doesn't make any sense anymore. You might get better performance in some games, but the vast majority of games will either have marginally better performance, no change or worse performance.

It's a good thing, so customers do the logical choice of only SLI with flagship cards

SLI is dead, has been for a while, and it's about time they just fully get rid of support for it. If you want an unnecessary SLI flex get the 3090.

If you are using 2 2080s in sli, than one 3080 will beat them, and then some. Also, there still is a chance for nvlink on the 3080ti.

I kind of wish the 3080 had it (really hope the 3080 ti does) but I don’t really care as long as atleast the highest end card has it.
Is it at all practical? No. Is it essentially dead? Yes. Why do I want it on the top end cards? With those very high end builds with an absurd budget that are using a custom loop, I think a loop with 2 water cooled GPUs looks way better than 1 gpu. With builds like that, looks really matter a lot and price to performance not so much. Also there are people who are after every single possible frame and are willing to pay for two 3090s even if that $1500 for the second one results in a very small performance bump.

I think it's a good thing. Occasionally people post here thinking that they should get sli, and this forum quickly corrects them.

it's not obvious to know that 2 cards don't equal 2 performance and also caca in the middle. 

 

This way there will be less confusion.

I haven’t seen any leaks or rumors about it, but I’m assuming they will be launching the ti cards like normal this year. IIRC, the ti cards are released a few months after the original launch so that might be why they didn’t mention them at all.

Oh ok, I'm attempting to do the evga stepup program and it only gives you 90 days from purchase which gets me through mid October so i'm not sure if i could wait for the ti version

Titan, yes. TI no. TI and titans have always been different.
