The voice gives it away instantly unfortunately. The head is more believable, it just looks like Linus in front of a bad green screen... most of the time. Sometimes it doesn't really look like Linus at all though.

Seriously, that video on Shortcircuit was creepy AF to me. Even before I noticed the "deepfake" in the title, I was confused because that wasn't Linus to me. It was like looking at knockoff Linus instead of actual Linus.

There's still some work to do IMO, but it could certainly, one day, be used to replace hosts.

That shortcircuit video gave me an uneasy feeling.

Given the current technology, it's pretty good. That said though a highly rendered 3D model of Linus would be more convincing and easier, maybe you should try that at some point in the future.

This is impressive, and honestly makes one wonder what people with actual computing resources could do.

Using a multi GPU setup might "hurt" performance, but the additional memory might hand back quality. I have not tried myself, so I don't know.

Reminds me about the video Tom Scott did 2 years ago about Future shock and deep fakes back then.

Considering Linus did basically nothing, that's pretty good. I found his head looked a little photo-shopped and almost seemed just a tad too big, the coloration and expressions also reminded me of Bilbo Baggins. The voice was probably the least convincing as is sounded a bit robot-ish, but it wasn't too bad.

As a random aside, the actor they hired looks a lot like my physics teacher which is weird.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

I did not get an uneasy feeling from that video, it looked very obviously like a fake. The shadowing and shading is a dead giveaway. Maybe it's because I'm actually watching videos at 4k on a 4k IPS panel? Maybe it's because I read the thumbnail and saw that it was a deepfake....

 

If anyone has done a "spot the fake" video using deep fakes, I'd love to attempt it. From what I understand the human eye is apparently VERY good at spotting fakery. (allegedly)

 

I noticed the following:

The head is out of scale with the body. It looks far bigger compared to the body than Linus' actual head is to his body.

 

The hair changes slightly as his head moves around (like, the actual pattern of his hair. Not where you would be focusing though. More noticeably on the back and sides rather than the front), much more than just shifting (which Linus' hair doesn't do, as far as I've ever noticed). Not to mention that there is... almost a fuzz around the edge of the hair where it covers the background as the head moves around.

 

And the voice is just obviously a robot. I can't describe it, but it's just obviously a fake. It's like a wavering? Instead of steady "tones" it's like something is.... I'm not sure what the word is for when a single sound "wobbles"?

There is at least one audio..... artifact? at 0:43-0:45 when the voice says "wrist rest"

It's partially because it says "wrist rest" far faster than any human would because of the difficulty of properly enunciating those two words, and because any sane human would have just said "palm rest" because it's far easier to say.

 

Also because I've watched enough LTT content to know that Linus speaks quite clearly, and often takes care to enunciate properly. Which is a hallmark of anyone well practiced at public speaking.

I gotta say, the most glaring issues here are all audio related. The voice does not follow Linus' pattern of speech. It doesn't have the right pauses and hesitations. And in a few places it just completely mispronounces things like at about the 0:52 mark, where the script is "I like ergonomic keyboards that use nav clusters" (according to the closed captions), it sounds like the voice says "non clusters".

 

Apologies to @LinusTech, I am bored and enjoying spotting the mistakes. I feel a bit bad for trying to rip apart the hours and hours of work I know your people put into this project.

 

If anything, it should be comforting to know that people can still spot a fake? The idea of being able to easily and perfectly fake someone in a video is somewhat terrifying, because it throws video and audio evidence in the trash entirely.

IMHO the biggest problem about deepfake is when people who barely or totally doesn't know about a certain person (in this case, Linus), and/or does not know about the thing called deepfake sees the fake one, especially if they have low end PC/Internet and can only play youtube videos at lower res due to internet data price. I mean.... that person may straight up believe that it's the real deal.

 

The keen eyed ones will spot the ... "quirkyness" right away or after some time, but the question is how many keen eyed ones are out there?, at this day and age even something that shouldn't ever go viral can go viral like a wildfire, that alone (for me atleast) is already a big proof how many people actually have keen eyes, or do some research before believing and/or spreading something that looks absurb / morbid / whatever while a simple google search will tell you its a hoax / fake.

"quirkyness" right away or after some time, but the question is how many keen eyed ones are out there?, at this day and age even something that shouldn't ever go viral can go viral like a wildfire, that alone (for me atleast) is already a big proof how many people actually have keen eyes, or do some research before believing and/or spreading something that looks absurb / morbid / whatever while a simple google search will tell you its a hoax / fake.

 

I'm not @LinusTech, but I think the video supposed to trigger reaction about deepfake and/or to see if people can notice the differences, and/or how many differences peoples can spot. So I don't think you are wrong in doing so, Not like you did it in a bad intention anyway, right ? XD

Several interesting points here. The more people see a deepfake, the greater a chance it has to be exposed. At least, that's what I would expect. Not to mention the chance of it going viral a first time (initial reaction), then going viral again for being exposed as a fake (reaction to the reaction, which could potentially go bigger)

 

As for going through this video and pointing out the issues. I worry that I'm helping them make better fakes. Them as in, the developers, not LTT.

 

@LinusTech can't retire yet. At least, not unless they hire that girl back that was constantly talking shit and was hilarious. She could absolutely take over for Linus as host.

 

One final thing I've noticed. The robot voice puts almost no emphasis on any words, or at least, not as strong of an emphasis. Something Linus absolutely does.

A better subject for a deepfake would be Tech Jesus himself, as the robot voice would better suit his pattern of speech.

Well, the technology most likely gonna get better and better. Hopefully by the time it gets near perfection there will be a good enough AI to counter it. xD

 

@LinusTech had a girl employee? I thought they're all dudes (Not counting Yvonne since I consider her the mega boss).

 

But yeh, I've been thinking since like 30 minutes ago that the no emphasis is an obvious tell tale sign (atleast for ppl who watch LTT vid often), due to Linus usually emphasize a lot. xD
