I've been working today but my wife is playing the new Zelda game in the background. The music to it is really good. It almost has a Miyazaki/Studio Ghibi feel to it. Anyone else noticed that?

Oblivion is pretty good if you like classical orchestral stuff. Halo also has a few good tracks

Yours faithfully

I'm just going to recommend some songs that're not part of a video game, since it kind of limiting:

-If you're traveling on road, I recommend Tales from the Borderlands: Silver Lining.

-Beyond Two Souls has a great soundtrack

-Heavy Rain soundtrack

-While my Guitar Gently Weeps by Regina Spektor

-Life is Strange Soundtrack is fucking great

-Kaleo: Way down we go

-Johnny Cash: Hurt

oh shit, i didn't  meet any of the OP's suggested requirements

The Halo:ODST soundtrack was a surprise favorite for me. Nice blend of orchestra, dark percussion, with ambient and even jazz undertones at times; a bit different from the main series' scores.

As far as Video Game OST, I would say:

  • Transistor OST
  • Halo 1 thru 3 OST
  • C&C Red Alert OST

Otherwise maybe try some:

  • Apocalyptica (Beacuse who doesn't like Metallica on a Cello... Although I like their Rage of Poseidon)
  • Bassnectar

  • 1 year later...

Hopefully this'll keep soundtracks out of my thread for game audio design. :P

I'll start with my Japanesey Persona soundtrack favorites.

As a whole the series has a pretty darn great soundtrack.

They Are Billions has a freaking awesome soundtrack.

This song always brings me chills.

The main theme is also really good.

This one really captures the frantic scramble a player has while preparing for the final wave.

You strike me as the kind of man that would be a fan of Two Steps from Hell.

I've heard some of their stuff, I forget the name of one song from them I really liked.

Probably not too original of an answer, for me Batman: Arkham City

It's used in gameplay really well also, but then again, for me, there's not much wrong with Batman: Arkham City.

I'm biased, Burnout Paradise had a fairly decent soundtrack with some really good rock bands mixed in. So good in fact I've bought albums by said bands like SugarCult and Operator.
