Is this GPU throttling with no intake?

My friend has a case with 3 exhaust fans and 0 intake fans.

 

He uses a GTX 1060 and wants to buy a new graphics card cause he wants to play on highest settings on World of Warcraft.

 

My question is, is it possible that his graphics card is giving him less FPS due to thermal throttling and him having 0 intake fans?

You have to have him run HWmonitor or some other free software to find that info out.

 

Having no intake, and only exhaust is called "Negative Pressure" in PC building.  Nothing wrong with that, as it typically eliminates hot spots inside cases.  If there isn't enough airflow however we cant tell until we see some numbers.

The air will come in through other holes in the case or through the power supply or other places.

Having all exhaust just means worse airflow and more dust.

So yeah temps might be slightly higher because of it.

Side bar, how does WoW not run on high settings on a 1060? The minimum requirements are GTX 560 / Radeon 7850.

He showed me a pic a few days ago and his case was filled with dust. Don't think it's even possible to get that out.

Yeah that''s what I was thinking which is why I thought that it has to be thermal throtting.

the best move to reduce it long term is move to 2 filtered intakes 1 out

What case?

He ran the app and his GPU capped at 67 degrees celcius

There are 3 types of GPU cooling - axial (fan that blows air around inside the case), blower (single fan on GPU, super loud, obnoxiously so but if he has one of these its also another exhaust), or liquid cooled.  Im going to assume he has axial so the only difference will be how much hotter whatever he gets run in comparison to his current card.  67c is well below the thermal threshold for modern GPUs btw.

 

Now to test if he has an ACTUAL airflow issue.

 

Tell him to do the exact same test but with the side panel of his case removed from the PC.  If his temps are substantially lower he has headroom to lower temps with added intake airflow.  If not, then his negative pressure is working.
