SK Hynix is getting ready to make DDR5-8400 memory

Once or twice in a decade, the self-elected council in charge of such things throws new memory technologies into a basket and calls the basket DDR-whatever-the-next-number-is. Then, a few years later, a company like SK Hynix manages to turn that basket into the picnic we’ve all been waiting for.

SK Hynix is preparing to start mass-production of DDR5 this year. They anticipate it taking 22% of the memory market in 2021 and 43% by 2022, so it won’t be long until all our gaming rigs need an update. AMD’s Zen 3 and Intel’s Sapphire Rapids architectures could both potentially have DDR5 support when they're launched in the coming year.

 

 

Beyond speed, there’s a whole stack of other technologies.

A fourfold increase in density will make high capacity sticks cheaper, and new volumes of memory possible. Lowered operating voltage and peak-to-peak voltage (VPP) will boost power efficiency. On-die ECC (error correction code) and ECS (error check and scrub) make for much-improved error correction and reliability. Decision feedback equalization circuitry reduces the noise of the electronics which improves the per-pin speeds.

My Thoughts :
 Since DDR4 has been released 6 years, i think its time for next Gen Memory that will move the needle forward.

Yeah yeah, right, silly. What next? You're gonna tell us more cores are better than rgb? I'm sure DDR5 will be great but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

finally onboard graphic won't be so hamstrung by a lack of bandwidth to memory.

That's pretty cool, but as far as I can see for now there aren't any cpus or motherboard to support the memory standard, and if next generation intel and ryzen are to come this summer I don't think those will support the technology either, considering it is quite new and they need to test for compatibility with the ram, if they're too late in production and find that ddr5 is incompatible, it is unlikely that they will stop production to make changes to suit ddr5. Supposedly they could make the generation "transitional"? I mean like have support for both ddr4 and ddr5 and just leave it to the motherboard manufacturers to choose.

 

Also unless the density will increase I'm not really sure whether servers or machines that require lots of ram will actually upgrade to DDR5, like the density seems equivalent of what DDR3 used to offer but even then you can still find ECC ddr3 with up to 32gb ram I've seen.

 

Hopefully also the price of the ram won't be overwhelming, obviously that will depend though on how difficult it is to produce them and what is the actual cost. Can't wait to see how much of a boost ryzen would get from this memory and how much better integrated graphics could be with the increased memory frequency and bandwith as well.

If ddr5 is faster, does it mean that bandwidth per CPU core increases too?

Won't it help a lot for data center usage and super fast NVME SSD raid 0? (from a recent linus vid)

Given that the speed of the infinity fabric (amd cpus) also increases.

Wouldn't it prevent memory bandwidth bottlenecks for 128 (or more) core cpus in the future (maybe the next flagship EYPC) ?

Someone explain to me plz.

What I am sure of that it would be much needed bandwidth for budget gamers with AMD APUs.

We've been down this road a few times before. 

The solution is likely going to be on-package HBM... and at that point who cares about system RAM speed, just get cheap and spacious.

DDR4 to DDR5 is a huge change but yet my wallet is still the same. Butterfly coming out of my wallet when I open.

The "fastest supported" is never the fastest, though. For instance, Intel never had anything above 1600MHz as supported DDR3, everything else was "OC". AMD did get to 2133MHz, but only with the very last DDR3 APUs.

It's the same with DDR4: AMD is a bit more aggressive with "officially supported" speeds, while Intel tends to be conservative and leave everything as OC (I'm not sure if the official support is any higher than 2666, but I might be outdated). Server CPUS usually are more conservative, but that's ECC and not the relevant APU case anyway.
