What is this teeny tiny screw that came with my motherboard for?

I found this teeny tiny screw in its own little baggy when I opened up my motherboard box but what is it for?  

 

Its even smaller than the screws used to install M.2 drives.

Looks like the screw to mount an M.2 SSD.

I'd assume that that'd be listed somewhere in the manual. (if I knew what it did I'd tell you, don't worry :P)

Are you sure it's not one of the three M.2 screws?  That is the only screw like thing mentioned in the package contents:

It came with 2 different bags each with 1 tiny screw in them.

 

But my motherboard already has the 3x M.2 screws on it already for all 3 slots. They’re screwed into the motherboard itself next to the respective M.2 slots.

No one does that anymore.  Reading manuals, that is.

 

M.2 screw as said above.

Are you sure the 3 screws you're seeing aren't the standoffs for the M.2 drives?

I checked already but my motherboard has M.2 screws on it already.

 

They look like this.

That screw holds the M.2 drive into the top of that one.

That in your hand and on the board is an M.2 standoff an M.2 screw will screw into.

Last I checked only 1 screw is required to install an M.2 drive.

Ah ok I didn’t know one screw had to be screwed into another screw.

 

But then why did they only give me 2 screws like that and 3 stand off screws for 3 M.2 slots? Shouldn’t they have given me 3 of the tiny screws as well?

It's a spare standoff screw. It's for the case stand off, not the M2. They've come with boards long before the invention of the M2 slot......

I don't know why it's like this, but looking at your pictures, I can see by the crosshead on the top SSD that it already has a screw, while the other two slots don't have a screw on them yet.

The board you have only has 2x M.2 slots, so 2 screws for two M.2 drives. Stand offs are not easy to find so they gave an extra one, just in case. If you're going to install a M.2 drive in the future, look at your motherboard's manual.

No it has 3 actually. One of them just has a heatsink on top of it.

They all actually have stand offs, I didn’t know that I had to screw something into something else that was already screwed in though, I thought the standoff itself was the screw.

It technically is too! The standoff screws into the motherboard, and the screw screws into the standoff.  - the standoff is basically a sort of double screw

its the screw for m.2 sata slot. it will screw down and lock the drive into place

I believe the screw is hidden underneath the heat sink. if it's not there, then the screw for the heatsink is also the one for the m.2 drive.

And the moral of the story: If you don't know which screw is the right screw to screw into the standoff screw you are screwed  Sorry, couldn't resist
