AM4 upgrade from Ryzen 5 1600X (budget cautios)?

Assuming both R5 3600 and R7 2700X costs roughly the same (190-200€) while the R7 3700X costs a lot more (375€), what would you upgrade to from a Ryzen 5 1600X?

 

Main PC use (naming only resource hogging tasks): gaming (not competitive games besides BFV and CoD:MW), rarely game streaming, rarely video editing for youtube, benchmarking

Resolution 1440p 144Hz, GPU RX 5700XT. The rest of my system is under my profile.

I mean if you want more gaming performance then the upgrade path is the R5 3600.

I ahh wouldn't upgrade. I'd wait and see if your mobo is compatible with next gen (some will be some wont apparently). There will be an increase with the 3600 but I mean imo of course but hardly enough to warrant it. I have an r7 1700 and im seeing if my mobo will work with them if it doesn't i'll probably stay with this cpu for another 3-5 years. Yeah it sucks not capping your monitors hz but honestly unless you go with a intel cpu and oc you wont really push it enough to consistently hit the cap. Know that's not what you asked but figured 2 cents is always worth giving. As long as its given as advise and not mockery.

Id overclock the snot out of that CPU.  Massive gains to be had and leave it as is.  You will likely perform (if you can hit clock speeds like mine) similar performance to a R5 3600 at stock settings.

 

In my sig, RR2 is OC'd, RR1 is not.  Basically identical rigs.  1500 point difference in Firestrike just by overclocking the CPU.  Links in said sig

Both are good chips, it really depends on how many cores you usually utilize, personally I'd go with the 3600. However, I'd wait until the next consumer chips are released tbh.

I would be fine with an 3900X ... but I won't spend that much. I would if the PC was making me money. This way, the PC is just a bottomless hole to throw cash in.

The 3600 due to it's better IMC for higher RAM speeds.
Even though the 2700 x is a good chip I'd still favor the 3600 overall, only grabbing the 2700x if the core count itself would make that much of a difference.

I doubt it would though.

Another benefit of the 3600 is it's lower wattage rating of 65W vs the 2700x's wattage rating of 105W.

Nothing but win with the 3600 - Be sure your board's BIOS is up to date and go for it.

Seems that boards like mine hate Zen2. The 2700X might be the safer choice.

i think overclocking the 1600 is the way to go, u won't notice TOO much difference going to a 2700x, but it's not a bad upgrade if you are gonna keep it for a long time, that said, zen 2 with ddr3600 ram is pretty sweet.

Bear in mind this is really pushing things, you won't be able to do this in an everyday build without alot of risk.

Go with the 3600, easy upgrade. the 2700x yes it has more cores but will be slower in the long run. 3600 uses less power also.

I have to mention, with this 1600X my XMP (both profiles, 3200 and 2933) isn't stable. Perfectly stable on 2666.

I won't switch the RAM to some faster, that's spending for no real improvement. RAM wil work faster with the new CPU.

sometimes xmp is bugged and doesn't also change the dram voltage as it should. try to manually set dram voltage to 1.35 and then see if 3200 works.

The RAM is made for XMP on 1.2V. I'll try 1.35.

It's really hard to test. Memtest86+ passes fine, but the system crashes from time to time, sometimes day pass without issues sometimes more often.

Memory controller on the CPU is only guaranteed to 2666mhz on that chip.  Everything else is really tightening down the outlying numbers.  

 

For me, to hit 3600mhz and 3200mhz on both my R7 1700 rigs stable is manually setting the frequency, letting timings be picked by what boots (because all of my benching tells me that timings mean nothing compared to frequency, which is king) using XMP style voltage and increase from there as needed.

Ive been eeking out my Fury's till the last moment.  I am either going with the 5700XT also, or the newly released variants coming (which will hopefully drive 5700XT down in price a margin)

The thing is, I feel like it's the weakest link in my rig. Everything else is mid-range, only the CPU feels low end.
