The best resolution to game on?

Gamer Schnitzel

I saw on Steam that most people have 1080p monitors. What do you guys think is the best resolution for AAA titles?

Linus says that 4K is stupid and I think that is true, since your PC monitor is small, So would it be 1440?

Or do you guys think that 1080p is more than enough?

1440P is nice, but 1080P is better if you're on a budget or need high FPS for competitive gaming.

2560X1440p and 3440x1440p are the holy grail of gaming right now, only decision you have to make is if you want 16:9 or 21:9.

That said 1920x1080p is still adequate, either a high refresh monitor for competitive gaming or say an older 1080p TV up to 40inch is still fine for couch gaming.

4K is dumb, visually it's pretty much the very same as 1440p on a 16:9 27inch display... you need 32inch minimum to make any difference and even then nothing 1440p with AA can't achieve in my opinion.

With 4K then you have the draw back of it being waaaaaaaaaaaaaay harder to drive requiring you to either afford a very high end GPU or dial down graphical settings, but if you end up going too low on the image quality what's even the purpose of 4K? it'll be sharp but also ugly so eh.

I would say 1440p for AAA titles, unless you really need 144Hz or above, in which case 1080p.

1440p is the best at the moment between pixels and graphical settings. For competitive gaming, 1080p 240Hz is the go to but I think that that will shift to 1440p in a few years as there are already 1440p 240Hz monitors on the market.

Depends on the game.

1080p for something faster paced, you don’t need the detail.

1440p for something medium paced if you can keep it in the freesync/gsync range or slow paced non-FPS critical.

4k as for 1440p or where 30-60 FPS makes no difference

Depends on your hardware for the most part. The second aspect may be the types of games you play. The third would be whether you want your games to look or play better.

That's because 1080p is the highest quality within a budget of around $75.00 to $100. Which is what the majority of people don't mind spending on a gaming monitor. Plus 1440p and 2160p monitors were not within a budget of around $200 like they are now. Give that Steam chart another 5 years, 1440p might creep into the top.

1440p because my hardware can achieve 75 to 200+ fps in it for almost every game I throw at it.

This isn't true to everyone. If your hardware can achieve the frame rates you're looking for, nothing wrong with 2160p. You need to make sure you don't buy a small 2160p monitor. I recommend 31.5-32" minimum for 2160p. 27" to 28" is perfect for 1440p. You can find 2160p monitors go for around $230 but they're not going to be 31.5-32". It's perfectly fine for gaming in 2160p at 27-28" but it presents scaling issues outside of gaming. Which KILLS your eyes if your eye sight isn't the greatest. I squint like crazy when staring at a 28" 2160p monitor outside of gaming.

The good thing is that over the past couple of years 2160p monitors have dropped in price(around $230 for them now). The bad thing is that 31.5-32" 2160p monitors are going to be the price that 27-28" 2160p monitors were a couple years back($300).

Nothing wrong with 720p, 900p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p. It's all about what your hardware can achieve.

Usually 1440p, best compromise between 1080p and 4K.

High resolution hugs, but also high FPS hugs, best of both worlds.
