Ryzen 9 3950X or I9 10980XE. would you take amd or Intel?

It's time for me to move on to a new system and away from my current X58/I7 980X I have been on for over 10 years and it has begin to show sign of unstability like bsod or freezing and I know it's hardware related and I don't want offer more money on this old platform. 

 

As it is now, I can chose between Ryzen 9 3950X/X570 board or I9 10980XE/X299 board. Threadripper 3 is not in my plans as i don't have the need for more than around 16 cores for the coming use. 

 

Use case is mostly gaming while streaming, video converting and a little bit of photoshop. Else the general heavy multitasking I do daily from next week as starting on a new job where half the job is working from home and why I need a descent strong cpu.

 

So what cpu would you take out of these two and why?

AMD all day!

Blows intel away in what you want to do with it. 3950X is the multitasking and general HPC king (in the consumer market)

unless you're professionally video editing and rendering, I can't recommend either the 3950X or 10980XE, the Ryzen 9 3900X makes the most sense.

Doesn't the 3900x have a crazy price hike right now due to supply and demand? 

 

Regardless, the AMD option will be far more cost effective than the intel option. Saving anything from 300-500 bucks from their supposed launch pricing. Thats enough for the MOBO and power supply at the least lol. Can put that money into a better GPU or case or exotic cooling or whatever. Cost alone since the 3900 or 3950 are no slouches, would be my deciding factor.

Personally would base it on OC headroom.

 

i would guess that the top 10980XE wont oC as well as the 10900X, but i would expect the 10920X to not be much different at all in regards to OCing to the 10900X.

So i would go with the 10920X

 

Atleast for me. coming from a 3930K. Double my core count, and hopefully get a higher OC over the 10980XE for higher single thread performance.

The 3900X is probably what you want to look at. The X299 CPUs are high-latency and thus poor for gaming and Adobe workloads. Go for Zen2 or a 9900K

Why would you even consider the 10980XE if you don't need more than 16 cores?

 

For Photoshop and gaming, you'll need more single-thread performance, so out of the two, the 3950X would probably be the better option, as the 10980XE will be clocked lower because of the large number of cores, or at least I'd assume the 3950X will run at higher clocks, unless it's a space heater, which hopefully it isn't. 

 

Also, with what you've said about your use case, I'd say the 3900X would also be a good choice, if you want to save some cash. In the Intel lineup, you could also be looking at a 10920X, which looks very similar on paper to a 3950X, at a lower MSRP, that being said, you'll probably be spending more on the motherboard in that case, as you're looking at an HEDT chipset, whereas with the 3950X you'll be getting by with an X570, though I wouldn't cheap out on the board (I'd go for at least something like a Strix X570-E or even a Crosshair VIII Hero from Asus).

dont go for 9900K! Its great for gaming but falls on its face for Content creation streaming etc when compared to high end Zen

lol yes. But I try to stay objective. As much as I love AMD: pure gaming king: 9900k 

In this case with a broader and highly multithreaded workload -> 3950x/3900x depending on funds

If you need the extra lanes and quad channel memory, then go with the 10980XE. If you don't (And chances are that's the case), then go for the 3950x.

 

And although you might not need 24 cores, it'd be worth seeing the prices for it first. If it's matched with the 10980XE at $1000 then it's a no-brainer. $1100 would be nice too.

 

I think you're not going to need more than the 3950x though to be honest.

I know 3950X will cost a fortune at launch due to all the hype and still a great sum of money later on, but the 10980XE still definitely cost more and absolutely as far as the board's concerned. Multitasking will be while I work on the pc for work. I will in the background make it do other stuff to like convert a video and work will be simulation running as well for work. Else it will be a lot of programs open at the same time and used.

 

It's not professional use yet, as I am still in a learning face and the new job is partly as a apprentice, but I chose these two CPU's as the company pays half of the pc any way.

I honestly don't know yet if the software I will be using for work/simulation benefit from quad-channel. My new boss just told me that he recommended a powerful cpu to get the work done faster.

 

My new job will pay for some the pc as it will be used for work as well at home. That's why I cut just as well get a fair amount of cores. So no I will only go after amd and Intel topmedel CPU's.

Yeah right now 3900X is totally overpriced, so I se no reason for to chose that over 3950X and as already told. My new work Will pay for some of the pc.

None of these two CPU's will oc that high. I know ryzen stops at around 4.3 ghz and intels cpu need serious custom water loop to go higher than 4.4 ghz all core. So no these CPU's will deffently not reach 5 ghz.

 

But I need cores over single thread. So hence my two choises.

The two CPU'S are clock fairly even. Single core boost is 4.8 ghz for Intel and amd is 4.7 ghz. Base clock is 3 ghz and all core boost is 3.8 ghz for Intel and amd is base clock at 3.5 ghz and we don't know all core max boost yet but I would asume around the same max boost clock for this one as well. 

 

If I chose amd I will be going after asus crosshair hero and if Intel asus x299 apex board.

9900k is out of the question. Way to low core count and 3900X is pretty overpreced right now. So i can just as well go for 3950X or 10980XE.

I dont need more lanes, but I am not sure about quad channel ram as I have yet to be told what simulation software I will be using.

 

16 core or just around that shut be all I need. No reason for paying for more than what i need.

You are right about efficiency on intels chip as they are still on 14 nm and for overclock such a cpu needs custom water and I am hoping for to just go with air cooling as I m not a fan of water inside with electricity.

About x58. It's more serious than that. Cpu or motherboard is degrading after years of overclock. So dissable c-state wount help. AL ready tried. 

 

Yeah 3950X will be expensive and so will 10980XE be. But as mentioned before, new job will be paying half of its price as the new job is part home work on my own pc. So for compensation work is paying for half of it and I the rest.

 

But it seems most people saying ryzen 9 3950X to go after and honestly I agreed after reading people points. 3950X is more power efficient, has pcie gen 4 and given its 7 nm shut be easier to cool with a decent air cooler as I am not a fan of water cooling.

 

So 3950X it is. Thanks for all inputs, very help ful.

3950X then. The X299-based CPUs use Mesh (as opposed to Ringbus on the 1151 models) meaning the latency is a massive hindrance to use-cases such as gaming where latency is a decently important factor.

Yeah it seems most people vote for 3950X, so that will be my new cpu then. Now it just has to become November so I can get my dirty hands on it.

I mean, the 10th gen X299 CPUs are rebranded 9th gen which are, in turn, rebranded 7th gen models. The 10980XE is the same fundamental CPU as the 7980XE. Slight fixes and improvements here and there but it's almost the same. Just with a price cut and new name. That's why people are recommending the 3950X - it's much newer, more powerful, far more secure and MUCH more efficient (runs cooler and uses less power)

The AMD cpu prices are out of control, wait to see what the 3950X price will be in the stores.

I will have to agree with it all as it is true. Intel lack behind because of them staying on 14 nm for so many years now.

 

3950X is a better choise over all. It might have 2 core less, but that is compensated by faster cores.

I was also of the understanding that AMDs SMT implementation is overall better than Intel's at the moment so depending on how it works on the 10980XE, the core count advantage may be negated. 

 

It may be worth keeping tabs on how much the AMD chips actually run to though. Last I checked they seem to be only boosting around 4.4ish (September 2019). I've seen rumors they are doing more changes to get them boosting faster, and for your use case that may not matter, but worth considering.

 

Right now, use case is king in the CPU world.

Before Zen 2, I'd see most peeps recommending Intel over AMD despite the headway made by Zen and Zen+....I dunno about others, but it's quite a 'sight' for me to 'behold'. Regardless, I'm happy to report that I'm really happy with my 3900X, I have it manually OC'ed to 4.475GHz at 1.35v via Ryzen Master, only reason I'm being held back in games is due to my VEGA64 GPU, I plan to remedy this by going NAVI 23 or Amphere next year, meanwhile, I can't complain about gaming with my card as I can still play at 3440x1440, max or near max ingames.......only games that really stress my GPU (pretty sure my CPU is more than capable) are Gears 5 and Borderlands 3, the latter more so than the former.

 

AMD 3950X is newer, more power efficient, has newer features and should be able to handle new and future games with ease (I still think the 9900KS would still be overall faster, but only by a small margin in terms of raw framerates) but can do so many other non-game related or workstation tasks better than Intel (per core count). Right now, since there's definite price gouging by some third party sellers (I got mine from Canada Computers when I was in Toronto at 699 CDN which was the going rate then at launch), so best to see which etailers will sell the CPU at MSRP. I hope peeps learn from the 3900X, grab it as fast as you can from etailers that sell at MSRP, prices won't come down from MSRP, they'd prolly go up due to opportunistic eBay sellers and such. That's why I'd snagged my 3900X just a day or two after launch.
