Is haggling different nowadays?

hardly, on the occasions I have offered a lower price, they just say "not interested" if it's anything above half price.

When I "make an offer", I usually do go to half price.  I don't expect to get it. (If I do, great)....but the reply I get usually tells me if it's someone I want to wheel and deal with.

Whenever I list something on craigslist I figure out what I want for it, then list it at +$50. Then people will shoot me an email and offer me $50 less than what I have it listed for and I say "yeeeaaahhhhh, I guess I could do that price"

This way I get the price I want and they feel good that they saved $50 off the price. Works every time.

I do the same. Coz people always want to bring price down so it's easier to play along lol

I have no problem with that question and give them my lowest price. I want to get rid of products and not waste my time haggling for a few more dollars. I rather take a few less dollars and sell the item

I've noticed it a lot too.

People want instant gratification with no effort. That coupled with the fact that most of the "haggling" these people have experienced are from video games.

I generally respond to "what's your lowest price?"

With "what are you offering?"

It's not worth it to even attempt to haggle with these people, 9 times out of 10 it's either a ridiculously low price that no one would accept, or it's "I have <insert junk> willing to trade?"

I sold a mint condition unlocked iPhone SE in the summer, and some dude offered in trade, like 3 broken phones and tablets.

What the fuck am I going to do with broken smartphones and tablets?

I ended up selling for asking price in the end.

"Dude, that's like 600 USD value when repaired!"

So like.. You repair and sell it and offer me the asking price of my device. Bye.

those are the scenarios I don't feel bad disrespecting the "buyer." Usually I hesitate to go to the "get the hell out" response, unless they're trying to shovel crap on me

Exactly - I don't have the time to repair a bunch of broken tablets and smartphones. And that's assuming a broken screen is really the only problem (surprise water damage, etc).

I will occasionally entertain trade offers - for good, working and functional trades - but I rarely accept them. When I'm selling old stuff, I'm usually after cold hard cash.

Usually I ignore them, or give them a "not interested". If it's a particularly insulting trade offer (Eg: a broken Galaxy S3 in trade for a mint condition iPhone X), I might tell them off a bit.

Really? Odd way to go about it. I immediately ignore people like you, as I don't take you seriously at all.

I'd be willing to bet be was a druggie. I get offers like that all the time. Typically from those with addiction problems, and they're stolen or devices that they found in the trash.

It's pretty basic haggling.. half can be assumed as cost in most cases, so you go from there. Somewhere between cost and list price is profit.  How much profit you get is about finding the point you'll sell and I'll buy.

It's an overture... you reply with a number you'll accept, and we go from there.

There's so many things wrong with your mindset there.

  • Used items cost is very rarely half of the asking price.
  • Retail stores very rarely make 100% mark up on the items they sell. Most of the time it's around 10%, if that.

You're approaching used items as if the person purchased them with the sole thought of reselling them for profit. That's an absolutely terrible way to look at it.

As for replying, no. If you offer me half of what I have it listed for, it shows you have no realistic understanding of it's value, and I ignore you completely and sell to someone else who has an idea of what they're asking about.

If you have someone else to sell to, I don't expect you to be making deals with me.  I win far more than I lose, and I don't pay more than I want for something, so my way works for me.

I've never had someone ask me what's the lowest price i would take but I've had a few people low ball me, I tell them no and they respond with "let me know if you change your mind". Like, dude I'm not that desperate.

well, then they just say "you should have said price is firm, not negotiable" but I do want people to approach me with offers slightly lower than list price.

That's when you tell them that it's the same amount of negotiating that they're doing by asking for your "lowest price" right off the bat. Negotiating is a back and forth song and dance but then I guess people don't actually know the definition of the word...guess people are really just dumb these days?‍♂️
