Radeon VII EOL?

Well it seems that Radeon VII may now officially be an end of life product after Cowcotland.com confirmed with their sources at AMD that production on the Radeon VII has now ceased.

According to Cowcotland, Radeon VII was declared ‘end of life’ last month by AMD.

This puts custom Radeon VII designs out of the picture and (I woud speculate) probably means that AMD intends to replace it with their more scalable RDNA architecture on their 5700 series GPU's. I think thats AMD's plan. RDNA is scalable and we have heard about the bigger Navi 20 GPU so makes a lot of sense. I think they have said they want to leave the 2080Ti on its own at the top. Unsure on that though.

No it is still valuable... It has 16GB of HBM2 memory. Haha.

Think Radeon VII will be a miners/compute dream due to the 16GB of HBM2. But gaming not so much. Its was competing with the 2080 but NVDIA kind of killed it with the 2080 Super announcement. Wouldn't be surprised if the 2070Super outperforms it.

There is nothing wrong with the card, it'll continue to perform well and be supported, AMD is phasing it out simply because they make no profit with it and they probably already sold all the "workstation" GPUs they had lying around in over-stock that's pretty much the reason why they turned this card into a "Gaming" card in the first place.

No reason to keep wasting limited 7nm production capacity on a (relatively) giant die for a product that made them no money, especially when the 5800/5900 should be out in the near future with presumably similar performance.

Wasn't the Radeon VII a card that was made just so AMD had something until Navi came out?

 

Makes me wonder how well it'd perform if it didn't have that super expensive HBM2 memory on it.

The Radeon VII is going to have a strong value for a long time because of its power is compute workloads. Granted, it'd be better to sell it sooner than later.

Main thing is the FP64 capability. You'd have to buy a Titan V to get better. This'll make it very valuable to science departments the world over for years.

AMD never kept a large supply of them. They're defect Radeon Instinct parts and as 7nm has matured, they've been getting less & less of them. Even if AMD EoL'd the 7, it'll probably be 4-6 months before it clears out of the channel. "Big Navi" should be in H1 2020 and will replace it anyway.

 

As a few of the deeper technical divers have found, it's probably the best Adobe Premiere device short of a 5k USD Quadro. That large VRAM buffer truly matters right now, though that'll be eclipsed pretty in probably the next high-end generation. But it really is the FP64 compute capability that sets the Radeon VII apart. For what it can do, you have to pay about 4x as much to get better on a new card, and the used market is pretty thin for high-end server-grade parts that can do it. In many ways, it's a very weird part that's going to see extremely long service life. A lot like the 7970 and company, as they also had that huge FP64 ability that wasn't topped in a "consumer" part until the Radeon VII.

 

Also, AMD probably EOLs the part every time Bitcoin goes up in price.

If true this is rather unfortunate for the Mac community. Radeon VII (from what I have seen) is a better compute card than the new Navi cards at this time. However, given the cost of the cards for consumers and the manufacturing costs for AMD, I can understand wanting to shelve this card. 

 

It was ambitious, but not financially viable. The Cooler is sexy af tho.

This really isn't a surprise. AMD just sold MI50 accelerators with a 3 fan cooler as gaming branded to stay on the market as Navi was delayed

I admit, thinking about it, it doesn't make sense discontinuing it now. Navi 20 or the higher GPU line hasn't even been announced yet.

Wouldn't be surprised. The new RDNA architecture is really sweet and makes the Radeon 7 look kind bad in comparison, for gaming.

 

RDNA is able to do so much more with so much less. AMD should revamp their gaming lineup with it top to bottom asap.
