FX What to Do

I just can't bring myself to throw away this old AMD FX 4100 System I have... it has like 6 gigs of ram and a functional 4100 on it and a GT 730 video card, but I know its nearly useless as a gaming rig I just wish I could come up with a good idea what I should do with it..

Render machine if you do video editing, plex server (as suggested above) or other kind of file server.

Machine to install Linux on do play around with (if you are not running Linux as your main system, that is).

Streaming machine, so you can livestream without tanking framerate on your main rig for example.

Old systems like that are fun for messing around with in general.

 

You could realistically do just about whatever you want with it, honestly.

I make my old parts into servers. I have an fx 6300 as a file/media server and an apu as a game server. You can find tons to do with old hardware.

 

Next up I am going to take an old Intel chip and make it a wireless backup server in my garage just in case anything happens. 

I refuse to read threads whose author does not know how to remove the caps lock!

I'm planning to turn my old FX-8320 into a silent computer system for my bedroom so I stay online for the MMO I play doing passive things over night.

I usually use old systems for OC builds. I clock it as fast as it can go. Gaming on it at 90° C untill it crashes, If shit hits the fan there isn't a big deal and 100 of dollars lost. New system only get a solid "safe" overclock not a dumb over the top one. My FX 6300 system runs on 4.35 or even 4.4 GHz at the moment, I give it another month and then the CPU is toast. My new system is almost complete so that is perfect timing. ?

 

You could also turn your system into a console killer. The GT 730 can run light games that are casual to play with controllers on a sofa. 

 

Plex or other tv systems are also a good plan, thought you can get a google chromecast for like 20$ that is, in my opinion more practical then a desktop next to your tv. 

 

I can not recommend to run this system as a server as It has a GPU you don't need.

I have a Phenom II 1100T based system, 8gb DDR2 and a HD6950...was my old gaming PC.

I'd still have it hooked up, but the amount of power it sucks up is extortionate for the performance it spits out xD

I'd set it up as a server of some description, really. Plex is a good one, as is just a file sharing server.

You gotta think the old Piledriver and bulldozer architectures were generally power hungry. That 4100 uses 125 watts compared to a 2600 using only 65-85w stock. The GPU is about 50-70 watts stock. Almost at 200 watts under load depending on your use case. That's without drives too. I'd recommend selling or pitching it.

Yeah I am running a Ryzen 5 2600 with an RX 590 right now so I really don't need a lot of extra heat in the room LOL

They aren't using that much power at idle or near idle, which is what they'll be doing for a file server.

Sell the old rig locally or online and just save the cash for your next upgrade or whatever.
