Ryzen 1800X was 4GHz, Ryzen 2700X is 4,3GHz. So 300MHz increase.

Now we are going from 4,3GHz to 5GHz? It does seems unlikely ... sure it's 7nm vs 12nm, but that still seems like a big jump.

 

Then again they went from 14nm to 12nm and achieved additional 300MHz. 1nm shrink = 150MHz by that logic. 12nm - 7nm = 5nm * 150MHz = 750MHz more than previous generation. So 4,3GHz + 750MHz .... that way it does seems like it would be possible. 

Now lets just wait for some CPU engineer to tell me, that's now how any of that works.

one has to look much deeper than that to know how fast ryzen could clock, nodes are some very complicated things, its easier to just look at the gains from vega by going to 7nm, which would put the clocks at around 4.8, add some binning (due to the massive amounts of dies they will have, and 5ghz boosts aren't out of the question

Zen to Zen+ had rather small changes, more or less only optimization + minor node shrink.

Zen 2 is an overhaul of the architecture + a major node shrink.

 

We don't know how these changes will affect clockspeed.

It could be worse, it could be 5ghz in all honesty.

Yep, and that's all we know, frankly if 5Ghz is a more often than not occurrence then that's awesome, but to expect it is foolish because when has any tech product released satisfied the expectation?

You know, as much as I wish that 5ghz and high IPC is going to be a thing this time for Ryzen, I can't help but feel that I wished that the initial Ryzen launch was better, and Ryzen 2000 was better(higher clock speeds) too. Every time I've been let down.

 

I mainly use my system to game, and I play high refresh rate, and so far that means Intel.

 

I have a 7700k that is starting to run hot AF, and I am really looking to jump ship to AMD this time as I used them from my K6/2 450mhz through my Duron 1100 through my XP 1700+ to my 2500+(overclocked to 3200+, gg 333fsb to 400 same voltage) and then my Athlon 64 setup until I finally went core 2 duo and never went back cause AMD never had a competitive CPU again(in my workloads)

 

It don't really care if in the games I play intel gets 320 and AMD gets 290, as that is faster than any high refresh screen anyways, I just want them to meet the minimum(which for me is 144-165@1440p).

 

If they can do that, I'm sold.

 

Goddamnit AMD, win me back.

Be aware that 5GHz is not with all cores at 5GHz. Same for existing R7 2700X. Turbo is 4.3GHz. Which is for 2 cores I believe. When you load 3rd core it drops to 4.2 or 4.1GHz, at 4 fully loaded cores it's 4GHz and so on. It depends on thermals and power load, but in general that's how it works. It's the same with Intel. So, achieving 5GHz at 105W is possible, because not all cores will run at 5GHz, the rest will run slower.

 

You could overclock yourself for all cores to be hitting that, but then you'll be dealing with 250W easily.

 

The fact it'll be able to hit that on any core (hopefully) is nice. It means you'll maybe be able to OC all cores to that. Because if turbo maxes at 4.3GHz it's very unlikely you'd be able to get any core to 4.8 or even 5GHz. Which was the case with 2700X. Still great CPU, but with some clock limits.

Well I'm waiting for intel 14nm++++++++++++++++++++++ on LGA9719, with 128 cores at 6.5ghz, and a TDP of 5000 watts
