95% of Worlds ATM's will be impacted by the death of Windows XP

Giddyguy

So basically it seems that most of the ATM's in the world use XP to power "software that bank customers use to withdraw money". Windows XP is set to cut off soon which the article says will leave ATM's open to possible security risks. The ATM's will need to be upgraded to use windows 7 but its been slow and some ATM's will require harware upgrades. The verge states that on a positive note, ATM's should become more responsive  :P .

What do you guys think.

I presume because it could (technically?) be safer. If a ATM running UNIX or Linux - even heavily heavily heavily modified that hackers (and or crackers)/thiefs would then try to install malware (although they already do that) and or . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

yea i was surprised to learn they ran windows. It seems logical for it to be some Unix OS.

hmm... why did they choose windows 7 over windows 8?

this is also surprising, i mean if windows 8 has more touch optimizations and supposed to have a lower system requirement it would make more sense for this use case.

I assume they run Windows because Microsoft provides security patches and can do so because security holes are found cause its a widespread OS, which would not be the case with a software written only for Arms.

I actually walked up to an ATM and it was just a Windows screen. I don't understand why they use Windows though, surely most of it is useless for ATMs, would some form of Linux not be better?

Linux sounds great on paper.

Support in a widely deployed environment would be a headache.  Despite its technical advantages, there's a reason why it still has the minority market share.

Because any custom OS requires programers and a complete complement of R+D staff to ensure the hardware works with software and is secure,  by using windows they only need to ensure the hardware can't be cracked open with a hammer and for the rest MS+application company is responsible for the security.

Banks have the tightest IT security measures of all, every time you hear of security breaches it is at the client side (adobe, target, sony, apple) never on the banks side.  I think the idea that windows is less secure than any other os stems from billions of stupid domestic users that click on unknown emails and surf porn.
