That's not really the TLDR of the article. It also doesn't take into account people who has big media libraries. 

For example I could easily fill 1TB of TV shows and movies on my phone. I won't watch all of it, but having a large portion of my video collection available offline on my phone would be great, especially for people like me who often travel on trains/busses/planes.

I find this to be a brilliant feature to have. Would switch my habit of offloading all my stuff to the mSD card when the internal storage is low to have a 1 to 1 copy between the internal and the mSD.

Plus a TB means for me a larger FLAC library, larger anime catalogue, BR rips, and use the phone itself as a plex server when in a hotel.

And to top it off: dual booting

I have massive media libraries, tons of downloaded movies and over 10k songs in my foobar library. I have 0 urge to transfer any of these to my mobile device, also, who in their right mind would want to go through that AWFUL hassle of moving 500 gigs worth of media over every single year? This is why the cloud exists. I only download a couple movies to my phone if I know I'm going to have 0 service, and even then I prefer to tune out listening to my music (downloaded pandora radios/tracks) which is INFINITELY more efficient/better. With current phone pricing we could assume that a 1Tb phone would fetch 1,800 USD or more. For that price you could get an iPhone XS Max 256Gb, MANY years of Pandora Premium and a shit ton of movies. Hell, if you're worried about photo storage then get a Pixel 3XL with unlimited photo storage, 128 gb of storage etc. for 999.99 USD, again for 1,800 you get a loaded pixel and many many many years of Pandora Premium plus endless movie streaming/downloading options. Note, I base my pricing off the iPhone XS Max's 512Gb model that goes for 1,500+ USD.

Uh, pretty simple; putting 1TB worth of files on it. You can easily fill your phone with 1TB of storage, if you put a ton of videos, music, etc on it.

Sure, it might not be your use case, it might not be the majorities use case, but it's some people's use case, and that's all it takes to have it come into existence.

Not sure what part of that you fail to grasp.

You're making the assumption that:

1) People buying this will get a new phone every year. They might not.

2) That it actually is a big hassle to transfer. You can just leave it overnight and it will be done. 500GB over 8 hours is just ~17MB a second. That's easy, and in the future when phones will use USB 3.0 then it will be even quicker.

For a lot of people, yes. But the cloud has the drawback of:

1) Not always being available or very spotty.

2) Eating up your data cap.

3) Higher power consumption than if the files were stored locally.

4) A lot of times, requires services which costs money.

So your suggestion to me, as someone who is going to spend hours upon hours in airplanes and the like, is to stop watching movies/TV shows and just listen to music because those files are smaller?

It's nice that you prefer music over video, but that's not really something you can suggest or should suggest to everyone.

 

 

I get that you don't want to pay, or need, a phone with 1TB of storage, but that does not mean nobody should have or get it.
