"RTX" just a suggestion?

Fasauceome

I've noticed some topics since the RTX cards launched saying things like GTX 2070 or GTX 2080 instead of RTX. It strikes me as unusual because a tech forum of all places should have a user base that understands the distinction. Do you guys think that some users see it as a feature that is not noteworthy so they disregard it (despite being the official product name), or maybe it's just lost in translation?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Eh. It's the same thing as me writing 2018 for the first month of 2019. It's been the name for such a long time that it's easy to slip up.

RTX being such a landmark feature (if not just to meme on "it just works") seems to me that it would make the distinction stand out more. This sort of reason I could see people using GTX instead of GT though, so not really implausible.

I mean, even the content creators still are saying "GTX....I Mean RTX yadda yadda" in their videos.  It will come to pass.

It's 1 letter though. Doesn't matter how popular. It's just the way our brains work.

If LTT changed to LTV, not matter how popular Linus is, it would take forever for people not to call it LTT anymore.

It's habit, as others said. We have been saying GTX for years now, can't expect me to adjust in only a couple months! :D

What makes a GPU standout more is the model number moreso than a string of letters that really don't mean anything in the first place. We're only using the letters to uniquely identify something further since numbers can overlap with another product. Like if I say "The 580", am I talking about a Radeon RX 580, a GeForce GTX 580? Or if I say "the 970", am I referring to a GeForce GTX 970, a Core i7-970, or a Samsung Evo/Pro 970? But if I say "GTX 970" or "i7-970" or "EVO 970", it provides a much better context.

eh, I myself quite often omit the GTX/RTX branding and just call them by the number. Works well so far.

When they launched I figured the non-RTX cards would follow suit (not with the ridiculous name 1660ti but still) so I had already assumed GTX vs RTX would be important.

Maybe use common sense to fill the info in? If I'm talking about a mid range graphics card then I'm certainly talking about AMD's 580, since Nvidia's 580 is an old ex-flagship that gets beaten by a 1050ti. As for 970, as long as it's clear that I'm talking about a GPU, or an SSD, or a CPU, or a chipset hen it should be alright.

It's not though. It's one game, and the cards are never coming to the mainstream mid-tier market because they jacked up the price of the RTX 2060 by $100. In most generations NVIDIA prematurely introduces a "feature" that's more trouble than it's worth, usually abandoning it after awhile. There was PhysX, SLI, 3D Vision, and a bunch more. Just like RTX, they all received mediocre support and were eventually forgotten, despite being marketed as a game changing feature.

On another note, people are constantly typing "GTX 1030". We've been using GTX for over a decade.

I say it doesn't matter until we have that bridge to cross.

Like I said though, it was hyped by Nvidia to be pretty important in branding. Also, I see a lot of threads using "the 2060 is better than the 1070 ti because it has ray racing" so it had some effect.

what does RTX stand for though? the R is for Ripoff fosho but what about the TX?

I'd prefer the numbers tbh, if I'm in a topic about graphics card I'd just say "a 2080" or "the 1080Ti" because we're all talking about graphics cards in the topic.

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

Because NVIDIA's naming scheme is retarded. And it just got even more retarded with announcement of GTX 1660Ti... And AMD isn't any better if they'll really call NAVI cards as "RX 3080". Same BS they are doing with CPU chipsets. It's idiotic and just further confuses consumers. Even I have trouble remembering all the similarly named chipsets and where one belongs...

I'm pretty sure it's just "NVIDIA has used GTX for over a decade now" and people are just used to typing it.

If they make the 11 series with gtx it would make sense to have the rtx cards named as such. At the same time cutting their own had if they did it to the flag ships and cut pricing.

Dont care for the rtx naming scheme either though. But referring to them as the 20 series or 2080 as it were is much easier. Just gloss over the features and treat it as any other lineup.
