Confirmed the processors used in these Acer and HP Chromebooks are the following:

  • A6-9220C
  • A4-9120C

Architecture is 'Stoney Ridge', appears to be a updated version of 'Carrizo'.

Not quite Ryzen architecture.

That said, some of the 7th generation Desktop APUs are supported on socket AM4.

Thoughts:

 

Since Intel's production crunch, cheap & low-power devices are likely in limited quantity right now, so it makes sense that AMD-powered ultra-cheap products are showing up from the big system builders. What's surprising is that it is still from the pre-Ryzen APU designs. I guess the new(?) APUs are extremely cheap for everyone involved.

 

Susanoo-no-Mikoto killed Yamata-no-Orochi in Japanese folk lore. The CPU Design in the "Constructor Cores" (Excavator/Piledriver) by AMD was originally called "Orochi". Yes, I stretched that far for a terrible joke.

270$ is a little steep for a chromebook imo, especially if they aren't ryzen based - I can only imagine they're trying to get rid of left over stock before going all in with the new ryzen design.

not really. i paid €300 for mine. it's an asus one, and it's built like a tank so there's that. it's designed for and marketed at schools so it's made to survive students throwing the stuff around.

 

it's also got a nice keyboard...

 

i agree it's a little steep for a chromebook but like not by much. and €300 is US$342...

It's at least a new design designation, but that's probably because of the firmware limits to 6w parts. (There's also something of an issue getting Zen1 APUs down to ultra-low power states.)

Yeah, I guess for schools it might make sense... I wouldn't recommend it for personal use when you can get more flexible refurbs though.

My chromebook was $300 USD but I didn't have to pay for it. My poor school district somehow paid for chromebooks for everyone.

Mine doesn't seem to really be a tank, I can pull the screen off...

Indeed. Don't know what the hell is up but they get significantly higher idle power figures than competing products resulting in lower battery life. That needs to get fixed sometime soon if AMD wants mobile success.

It seems to be more on the side of the motherboards for Zen1 in Laptops. Intel will definitely have an advantage in that realm (they spend a lot more money on the low power draw moves), but it has been a consistent report & issue.

Ehhh Dell's and Acer's offerings are $300+ and sub 250 are REALLY garbage computers. Acers is $330 I think and is x86, dual core, 4gbs of RAM, and swappable M.2 drive

Right but for schools they can mass buy 1500 and manage them all easily with free tools that don't take a lot to understand. They also last about 5 days on a charge

doesn't matter what hardware you put in a chromebook, the software is always going to be the weak point. until it's able to run every app/game/utility from the google play store then there's almost no reason to get a chromebook unless you literally just need a super-cheap web browsing machine

I'm just curious in what way these are designed for schools and why would a student use a Chromeook though. Maybe I can see it for generic use in schools an writing stuff. Though anything working like in a specific program nope.

mine is specifically marketed at schools because of the build quality. it has rubber on it and stuff so if I drop it it's less likely to get damaged. 

 

a lot of the things schools do are online. chromebooks can do that fine. 

 

pretty soon chromebooks will be able to run full Linux apps. it's currently in beta, but it will be released soon. that will allow them to run many more programs, including Windows programs using Wine.

It does come with trade offs. There's site blockers and and a bunch of youtube videos are blacklisted through a filter. It's understandable, they want us to use them to learn. As long as PC stuff isn't blocked I'm happy. The Chromebook they gave me is my primary way to use the forums here.

They didn't even bother with that stuff here lmao. I'm sure that people in the Netherlands are just generally nicer towards tech that kids at my high school. One of my friends convinced a freshman to drop his Chromebook like 40 feet and it destroyed it.

im so happy that the school system im currently is locked into the windows/Mac/(some)Linux Ecosystems of applications. 

this stops them from doing these dumb purchases. 

 

because they would definitvly buy these things. Hopefully the deal they have with Lenovo Continues, because its currently quite beneficial and the laptops we get are fairly good. (you get them free(sort of) and they are better than my 2012 laptop which im usign right now)
