9900K or wait for 3rd gen ZEN?

Hello everyone

 

Do you guys think I should wait for the Zen 3700X release in May (i think) or just buy a 9900K this month or next month? I have a very old 1st gen i7 so I really need an upgrade soon.

If you're honestly considering spending $500 on a CPU, I'd wait for Zen 3 since it should be a better value for your $$$ outside of gaming

Outside of gaming?  Have you seen the leaks or just don't believe them?

You could just wait until CES to see what AMD announces and then decide then.  These leaks look amazing so they might be fake/wrong.

Never take leaks, rumors, or even data provided from a first party as fact. Always wait for third party reviewers to verify any claims made.

 

Historical trends have been Intel as the Gaming CPU king, with recent AMD CPU's being better all around unless your workloads specifically require  or leverage AVX-512.

I'd wait for Zen 2. If the AdoredTV leaks are correct, you can get a pretty good CPU for about 500$.

Zen 2's CPUs are going to be shown at CES 2019 (January 8-12), so you don't have to wait a lot. (Probably released in February)

Can you afford to wait? It could be many months before Zen 2 consumer is around. I'd say, if you can wait to see if there is any news at CES since that is only a month or so. It's not like the 9900k is going to hold you back in consumer workloads. AMD have said they are prioritising server, so consumer parts may be 6 months+ away. I was hoping for April based on previous gen, and people were suggesting it may be later than that.

If you can wait, wait. Especially since if you're waiting a month, you'll know what the Zen 2 performance numbers will sort of look like. Though I honestly wouldn't put much weight behind AMD's claims, and would instead wait for individuals to do their rounds of testing.

The 3600x honestly looks to be the best chip of the lot. Depending on what you're doing, it might be an excellent choice.

If you're looking for the utmost in performance, I have a feeling the 9900k will still reign supreme. Just at a significantly higher cost.

They're all consumer chips. Epyc would be the business line of chips meant for data centers etc.

I mean right now the 9900k is the fastest single core speed out of any consumer or xeon line.  You either adopt that or wait a couple months for a AMD, which me personally would not get.  You can give her a safe overclock, or let the system do it for you.

Either way, you should wait, just see what happens.  Who knows, all the Zen 2 rumors could BS.  If they are, oh well, just buy the 9900K.  If the Zen 2 rumors are true, then I can't see a reason to not buy one at that point.  

 

That being said, if the Zen 2 rumors are true, and they are compatible with AM4 socket and X390 chip set...then I am absolutely getting one.  If they aren't compatible, then I'm absolutely getting one and a new mobo. haha.

wait, ultimately it is a short time and AMD could surprise with the new generation, 7nm is something very serious, wait one or two months is a short time.Please note that a Z390 motherboard will not support the new intel processors that will come to relieve the 9th generation, however the AM4 socket remains for the moment.
