Rumor: Apple might ditch the lightning port in favor of USB C for the next iPhone in 2019

I like lightning more than USB C actually.

But USB C being more widespread and our first true *attempt* at a perfect "standard". It's just far better for them to kill lightning and go USB C.

we're  almost there. Apple would be a major step towards us really moving towards USB C being literally on everything.

Can they just make it all USB C now? For quite some time, Apple is known to be stubborn when it comes to adapting open standards. Back in 2009, phones mostly use micro USB and Apple was like fuck that we're gonna use our own. The 30 pin connector was used by the iPods of the time and was used by the first iPhone (2007) until the iPhone 4s (2011).apple-pins.jpg.e95dc008dfbb6f2e9c7932ddd194275a.jpg

Then came 2012 with the iPhone 5 as the first iPhone to use the new lightning connector.

iPhone5-4186.jpg.a691a9c16da2d6bb8bf7cba0cfb18061.jpg

I think at the time, lightning is superior to micro USB because you can plug it in any direction without the fear of damaging the pins the way micro USB is susceptible to.

5b211a4e56d6f_microusbvslightning.thumb.jpg.29530388cf7715a836a8446f87cd83fd.jpg

Then a few years later, USB C came in with the same benefits as a lightning port where you can plug it on any orientation plus it supports faster data transfer speeds of USB 3.1 and even Thunderbolt 3. If the rumors are true, then iPhone users don't have to bring extra charging cables for their phones as they can just use whatever charger their laptops are using as long as it's USB C. At this point, what will happen to MFi certification if Apple now ditches lightning for USB C? As far as I know, licensing lightning cable to manufacturers is quite the racket for Apple and Apple's own USB C multiport adapter for the MacBook/Pro is rather lackluster compared to third party solutions. But then I wouldn't be surprised if they do finally adapt USB C. While so many people in this forum love to throw Apple under the bus (and sometimes with good reasons), many seem to have forgotten that it was Apple who was the first one to use USB A I/O in the first iMac (iMac G3 in 1998) even though USB was invented by Intel. Although I think this is more of a result of people wanting coherence of I/O between their computers and their phones and Apple is afraid that people will jump ship to Android if they refuse an open standard like USB C.

Then Intel in collaboration with Apple made a new I/O named Thunderbolt and MacBook Pros and Airs from 2011 are the first ones to have TB1 but uses the mini display port.

Which makes me wonder why PC case makers and motherboard manufacturers are adding only one or two USB C ports? I'd like to see which one would be bold enough from the likes of MSI, Gigabyte, et.al to make a motherboard that ditches all USB A to USB C.

I will believe it when I see it because Apple loves their proprietary ports.... enough to remove that headphone jack.

I'm all for USB-C on everything. It would be great in so many ways. Would eliminate the issue with incompatible chargers when visiting friends for starters. And if Apple would start pushing USB-C hard it would quickly grow in popularity.

But I have a hard time seeing Apple ditching lightning anytime soon. The switch from 30-pin to lightning was a bit painful for people invested in the Apple-ecosystem. But the switch from lightning to USB-C would be even worse. Almost everything Apple makes have a lightning port these days. It's kinda the USB-C dream we all have only limited to Apple products. They are far too invested in lightning to suddenly ditch it. Not to mention there is no real benefit to switch connector since lightning is fine as is.

On the other hand ditching the USB-A connector on the other end of the iPhone cable makes perfect sense. They are walking away from the USB-A connector on their computers so why not make the iPhone able to connect to your new macbook straight from the box? Not to mention it would kinda fit in a "USB-C all the things, except our cables have a Apple-only end also".

This guy has been spot on with his predictions and you don’t have to be anyone to understand Apple. Apple is a corporation and if you understand how corporations work, you understand Apple.

  • The source of this leak is not credible or reliable for their predictions are often wrong.
  • This same leak was presented last year and squat came out of it
  • The leak claims an adapter will ship with the phones even though the phone, according to this leak, should already be USB-C, so why would there be an adapter? (Is explained in the video)

Also just fyi, saying a channel only has x number of subscribers and therefore is not relevant is an appeal to authority fallacy.

Back in the year 1400 people knew 100% that the earth was flat. That didn’t make the world any less round.

By 1500 it was widely accepted that the earth was round.

Before then only a handful of people thought it was round.

Here everyone wants Apple to go USB-C but only a handful of people know that they will stick with lighting.

Why would they make a motherboard that can't connect to the majority of your USB devices?

What is the role of a motherboard? To plug your stuff together. What is a good motherboard? A motherboard that is ready to plug whatever you throw at it. What would an Apple-style, one-connector-use-dongles motherboard be? A terrible motherboard, of course, one that fails at its only job.

The value of backward compatibility is far superior to the value of... what exactly? It's not like motherboards lack space for all the USB ports then can manage, so...

Ports disappear from motherboards because they become unused, not the other way around.

It costs $19 and Apple has essentially removed the need to physically plug your device into a Mac. Everything is wireless these days.

You are more likely to not need a USB-C to lighting cable than you are too need one.

This “rumor” at best refers to Apple including this cable in the box, not that Apple is replacing lighting with USB-C. There is absolutely 0 justification for that in any business sense.

People dont plug in devices to transfer things anymore. They plug it in to charge their phone. Cant do that wirelessly on a macbook in case you didnt know.

I simply disagree. I see no reason to change what works perfectly.

I’d be more than ok with including a USB-C to lighting cable in the box, but I see no reason to switch to lighting only. Doing so would hurt iPhone owners and actually hurt Apples design team.

Lighting actually requires slightly more internal space than lighting does. Apple also loses out on royalties from licensing its own connector.

There are are too many reasons to keep lighting than to get rid of it. It’s just not going to happen, accept it now and you won’t have to complain that the next iPhones are all lighting equipped.

Lightning has some issues such as it's size. (Yes, this is an issue).

Because it's so small it's got so few connectors that it's got limited power capabilities. Using Lightning on the current iPad Pros is already probably coming close to maxing out the capabilities of the port.

The only reason to stick with it is not screw over existing customers and cos their royalties.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.
