Goliath - The Reforging - Stage 1

This is a follow-on to my earlier build log linked below. I've decided to rebuild the computer from the ground up in two stages. This is the first stage where I will redo the motherboard and CPU, swap the tubes from PETG to Glass, and make some cosmetic changes all around. I will also be fixing some mistakes from the first build with the case itself such as bad drilling and planning for the holes and other minor mistakes. Stage 2 will be a smaller update where I will swap out the GPUs from dual 980Ti cards to next generation 1180Ti cards when those release. The CPU has been delidded with liquid metal applied as well.

The Teardown:
Tore everything apart to find the Primochill Vue had stripped several fittings of their plating/coating. Some pictures are untouched fittings to give an example of the before. Those with copper/brass showing are the aftermath. Not all fittings were touched and while most were fine, some were pretty badly stripped of coating.

Added some build log pictures and figured I'd put some bits of the experience below.

 

Even with some hiccups on some of the old fittings *cough*Primochill*cough*, most of the fittings were intact and I had thankfully ordered plenty of extras beforehand. The glass cutting was interesting to say the least. I had bought a tile cutter, similar to the red one Performance-PCs sells but it kept walking the glass in a spiral pattern so I could never get a good break from it. Went out the next morning and bought a dremel and diamond blade from Home Depot and a mask for the dust. Keep in mind, if you're cutting borosilicate glass you NEED a mask for the dust. Took me a bit to get used to the dremel but two cuts in and I go the hang of it. Sanded down the tubes with some fine grit sand paper and they were ready to install.

 

I had one issue with the GPU loop. Once I finished up the GPU loop I decided to do a blow test. Capped off the drain and screwed some flex tubing onto the res and blew some air into the system to check for leaks. Due to the glass not having the flex like PETG I had to get creative with how I put things back together and that involved taking the tops off the GPU blocks, slotting the GPUs in, and putting the tops back on, with the tubes in-between. Unfortunately one of the O-Rings was loose and got smashed by the middle screw causing an air leak. Pulled it apart, found the O-Ring, swapped it for a replacement I had (yay for keeping stuff from previous builds) and then it was sealed up tight :)

 

Right now I'm running some Mayhem's Blitz through the system for the next several hours to clean things up and triple check for leaks. I hope to have the final system online tonight for some nice sexy pictures :)

And so Goliath has been reforged and is ready to crush whatever comes his way once again!

The lighting is a little off as I'm not the greatest at taking pictures. I also took this one before I realized the CPU loop needed a little top off so I'll try to fix that and the lighting then upload more glamour shots later this week.

What was your experience like moving from bending PETG to glass? (Debating on which I want to do for my first time)

 

Also is that still Primochill Vue? I've heard people like Jayz2cents say it's more of a show fluid, as it's very picky on all the metals used in the system (He's had 2 builds with them, one is flawless and one chewed through his system)

The experience was interesting. It requires a lot more fittings since you don't bend it (obviously) but once I got the hang of the dremel and scoring the glass it was pretty smooth. Just make sure you wear a mask if you use a cutting tool so you don't breath in the dust and get sick later on.

 

It's Mayhems Pastel this time around, after my experience with Vue (see the teardown pictures) I'll probably never touch the stuff again. I've used the pastel in the past without issue so I'm sticking to what I know :)

Just updated the original post with links to the cutting tool and bit I used. When cutting I had to angle it slightly to score the glass due to the size/shape of the dremel but it broke pretty clean. I would use the dremel to file down any large bits as well and get it pretty flat and then use some 220 grit sandpaper, 320 grit sandpaper, and emery cloth to smooth it out and buff the ends. If I could do it again I would toss in some 1200 or even 1600 grit sandpaper and 2000 grit sandpaper to get it an extra shine on the ends.

 

If you do go with glass, remember it's pull away from the score and then push out with your thumb for the best breaks. The pull is really important.

Having worked now with both PETG and Glass, how would you rate them in terms of Ease of bend/cut, ease of assembly, and final finished look? And if done for a third time (or a second future build), would you stick with glass or go back to PETG?

PETG is much more forgiving, definitely, and it has some flex to it so it's definitely easier to work with. Assembly wasn't too bad though but I did have to get creative on some parts like the GPU section, and some of the fittings decided to be a little difficult when putting the tube in but it was that way for PETG too so I would say they are about the same. If I had to do it again I would stick with glass just because of how much nicer and clearer it looks even though there is extra prep work to do, I still like the final product more :) Also, made an edit to the above post about how to work with the glass more easily.
