its an entry level Threadripper (kind of like what Kaby Lake x did with x299)

only really makes sense if you need the full 64 PCIe lanes off the cpu

amd is releasing a version with half the cores, but with the same number of pcie lanes and other cpu magic stuff in the dies
The 1950X has a 4+4+4+4 core layout while the 1900X has 2+2+2+2 core layout (4 per CCX in the 1950X and 2 per CCX in the 1900X)

hello!

is it me you're looking for?

Desktop: X99-PC

CPU: i7 5820k

Mobo: X99 Deluxe

Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 3

RAM: 32GB DDR4
GPU: GTX 1080

Storage: 1TB 850 Evo, 1TB HDD, bunch of external hard drives
PSU: EVGA G2 750w

Peripherals: Logitech G502, Ducky One 711

Audio: Xonar U7, O2 amplifier (RIP), HD6XX

Monitors: 4k 24" Dell monitor, 1080p 24" Asus monitor

Laptop:

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

The 1950X has a 4+4+4+4 core layout while the 1900X has 2+2+2+2 core layout (2 per CCX)

Threadripper only has two active CPU dies

1900x has 2 zen dies with 4 cores,

1920x has 2 with 6 cores

1950x has 2 with 8 cores

epyc has 4, but threadripper with only half the pcie lanes only has the 2

its for the people that want the 64 PCIe lanes but dont need 16 cores nor want to pay for those 16 cores. makes sense to me

*edit*

also im pretty sure we have known about this chip for quite a while tbh

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Indeed we do, it was announced by AMD on the same day Threadripper was released. This is old news.

This was announced with the rest of the stack. It's just releasing a few weeks later.

The more interesting question is when they release the non-X versions.

This was announced ages ago and should be available in a few days. It's basically an 1800x with a bit higher frequencies and quad channel and more pcie lanes.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Well, yeah, but AMD actually made a product with a...

How should I put this...

... A product that, in some way other than 'corporate decisions', justifies its existence and serves a function.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.
