Mac Pro and iMac Pro with i7 7900X on Geek bench

it looks like apple may not actually be using Intel's server processors for their 'pro' grade desktop and AIO, and will instead be using their latest HEDT processors. looking at some geek bench results, this does seem to be the case. Although please note that as it is only based on two benchmark results, so take this with a grain, or maybe a few grains, of salt. 

 

Another reason to take this with an over sized grain of salt is that directly on apple's website, they state that you will be able to configure the iMac pro with an 18 core Xeon and up to 128 GB's of ECC memory. Thus questioning the legitimacy of these results.

The Xeons would probably be for the most expensive versions of them-regardless of how retarded the X299 platform is.

I guess you can configure i9 and Xeon CPUs in the new MacPro Family. So nothing to be concerned about. I would love, to see Apple also offer AMD Ryzen TR based Pros but that won't happen soon. They have some serious contracts with Intel, right?

I think that the biggest problem for apple is not intel itself, but rather the tunderbolt 3 ports, that as of right now, is an intel exclusive ( but that's going to change in the next tears because intel is releasing tb3 patents and specs)

X299 doesn't get much hotter than X99 or Haswell-EP/Broadwell-EP Xeons at stock. There is also the fact that Apple can get X299 chips that are underclocked by default to the consumer.

Actually the original 5K iMac only came with an undercloked quad-core i5, and even that thermal throttled real easily. I'm not sure how their going to cool an 18 core i9 with a TDP likely over 140 Watts, even if it is undercloked.

Looking at the current Mac Pro, I can see a revamped, traditional desktop Mac Pro being able to cool these CPUs easily, and the iMac Pro being able to keep them adequately cooled outside of AVX workloads. They, and every other manufacturer, have come a long way when it comes to cooling at the high end.

iMacs use a single 90mm fan to cool the cpu and gpu, yeah GL

For Apple thermals usually are not a priority. Last year's iMac reaches over 90C in full load with ease. This year's model is a little bit cooler, reaching 75C+ in full CPU load [7700k 91W + Radeon Pro 580 150w)  I'm curious how the Pro model will be cooled all facts considered: 140W CPU and 210W Vega 56 and 295W Vega 64.

Temps are probably not Apple's concerns since they probably want the thing to die sooner or later so that you can get a new one and pop more money into their accounts.

Keep in mind that Geekbench tests aren't guaranteed to be an accurate reflection of what Apple is planning.  People can fake IDs, or Apple can test configurations that never reach the public.

 

Right now, I would still assume that the iMac Pro is only configurable with Xeon processors.  It wouldn't make sense to offer a 10-core i9 and then ask people to jump to an 8-core Xeon.  Especially when this would require that Apple design two mainboard layouts and likely consider significant TDP changes.

 

And the Mac Pro tower (I'm guessing it's a tower)?  It's not even due to be announced until sometime in 2018, so why would Apple use a 2017 Core i9 chip?  The odds are that the Mac Pro will use whatever's current for Xeons next year.

its called hackintosh. my 3770k machine is a 'mac pro 2013' too, yes you can get ryzen or x299 working on sierra.

I feel bad for the mac people I really do, I used to be one of them. Spending countless thousands of dollars on finally top end specs, and its no doubt going to thermal throttle like crazy. FeelsAppleMan
