Is it risky to take my laptop on a flight with me?

Inkz

I have a flight to Germany for a course I am taking. I have been deciding taking my large gaming laptop with me so I can copy files off my camera and so I can get more work done. I have had conflicting reports on if it is safe. Everyone says it is ok, but some say it is risky. I have no criminal background or anything, and I can't think of a reason why they would confiscate it. But I heard some people say it might get locked up in customs on the way back to the US. What do you guys think of this, my flight is tomorrow so I have to decide quickly.

Laptops are extremely common, there will be no issue.

I can't comment on flying overseas, but if you're really concerned and have read bad things about traveling abroad with an expensive laptop then I would suggest picking up a $200 netbook. I keep a couple in my office for when I need a "disposable" laptop when I go somewhere.

Grand Idea.

I don't think Germany is on the laptop ban list yet but you you just search "laptop country ban list" it also stupid because noone would buy an expensive beautiful gaming notebook and then blow it up

Just out of curiosity would you be allowed to bring the ASUS watercooled laptop on a plane

You should be...I've never tried it though.

I've flew to Germany many times, and took all types of electronics with me, including laptops. And they have no issue with them.

Thing is I've never flew from the states to Germany, only from other countries in Europe. So I can't tell you what the Americans will do.

New idea: I just realized something. I have my family to take custody of my laptop if I take it across, but I also have a host family in Germany. If for some reason it got stuck in customs in theory could I ask them to pick it up for me? They come here about 2 weeks after I come back.

Everybody does it, you risk nothing (exept if the plane crashes you can say bye to your laptop). I live in Germany and I fly minimum 4 times a year, never had any problem.

It might just be my country, but there's a good chance it'll be stolen or damaged since they just throw the bags around

That's an F in the profile pic

In and out of US is the problem part. Rest of the world isn't so paranoid about peoples private properly. They will scan it ofc, but since tools are banned, we don't care. I think only thing is that you need to be able to show its yours. By powering on and unlocking. But thats only in rare cases where you are suspected of some illegal activity.

It's only with the likes of China where they'll confiscate it and ask for your password lol

On a serious note, what Luke said.

If your laptop has a TPM, activate Bitlocker with a PIN for the time being.

Will at least stop them getting their hands on yo shit if they do confiscate it for some nonsense reason. And if they ask for the PIN or password, don't give them it.

I never trust password managers, so I don't have to worry about that one. Gotcha, I'll make sure to take off all the MLG, dank, porn montages off my laptop. (Just kidding, but I don't judge). Also at this point I am now in Germany, every thing went great, now I just have to worry about getting it back, TSA didn't decide to search to my knowledge (despite the fact of having my AW 17R4 in my checked baggage that could probably block half of the case from being scanned). I needed it for doing some editing and work in between my class activities during the day. Thanks, Luke. Edit: This morning I just found a TSA note saying they searched my luggage, I got rekt.

I didn't take it as my carry one, using a Alienware 17r4 in the back crowded economy class would have been pointless.

As long as you're not screaming you have a bomb, should be fine.
