Is it? Like when they ditched the 30-pin connector with a reversible lightning connector? Like when they made iPhone 4/4s (3.5") cases obsolete when they made a 4" iPhone 5? Like when they're now removing support for 32-bit apps in favor of 64-bit?

30-pin to lighting had real world benefits.

 

Move from 3.5" to 4" and eventually 5" had real world benefits.

 

Dropping 32 bit support is kinda a dick move, but the devices losing support are already past end-of-life and software not available in a 64-bit version 5 years later is clearly abandoned at this point anyways.

 

The move from 9.7" to 10.5" does really very little positive for customers. They're still keeping the 12" screen for the users who need a larger screen, and the jump from 9.7" to 10.5" is going to be fairly minimal in real-world use. It also means that the only smaller option you have for an iPad at this point is nearly 2 years old at this point, and has a 2.5" smaller screen, a much bigger difference relative the already smaller screen size.

Eh. Compared to an Nvidia Parker? I'd take a Parker in a heartbeat over a 10X.

 

Don't get me wrong it's better than anything Qualcomm has, but Qualcomm shouldn't really be our quality standard for high end tablets.

eh true , but parker is considerably higher TDP/power and nvidia hasn't really done a good job to integrate it into a lot of devices.

Assuming I didn't do the math wrong in my head the screen areas are approximately 53in² vs. 45in².

That's nearly 20% more screen real estate. I'd happily lose compatibility for some old accessories for a 5% increase let alone 20%.

Yeah except the 12" version already existed. If you need a bigger screen size that's not as easily tossed in a bag, why not move to that one?

The actual physical footprint of the new model hasn't grown proportionately with the screen size, though.  You're getting a significantly larger screen in a barely larger design.

 

And there are a few practical benefits.  Visibility, of course (particularly if you're getting older), but it also makes for a more comfortable on-screen keyboard and better side-by-side app use.

Not everyone wants such a big tablet but they do want a bigger screen. I would likely fall into that category. 9.7" would be too small and 12.9" would be uncomfortably big.

As a 3 year owner of a 8 inch Windows 8.1 tablet I understand where you are coming from but once you get used to what apps and programs are best suited and which you shouldn't touch (pun intended) at all, it is quite a good experience. The current limitation is the measly 1GB of RAM which means you can only have a few small websites open at once and very image heavy sites, androidcentral.com as an example are a pain to use. It is rather useful to be able to run x86 programs such as python or certain email clients.

I must say though that only having the metro version of internet explorer is a large drawback.

Yeah, it sucks that Apple will charge you so much more for memory that likely doesn't cost nearly as much.  At the same time, I can't entirely blame them.  Android tablet makers (not to mention some Windows tablet makers) get this almost perverse pleasure out of making unprofitable devices, as if they're really, really eager to go out of business.  Apple may charge an arm and a leg, but it's also the one that can survive a couple of bad quarters.

I'll maybe upgrade my 9.7" Pro next year, but not really worth the jump currently.

 

I use my iPad for watching YouTube and Netflix mostly, and I'll also VPN into my home router and Remote Desktop into my Desktop when I'm on the go.  Retina is awesome for viewing 1440 monitors.

They're using NVM express solid state drives. Other OEMs are either using SATA or eMMC.

I look at it this way: Apple is the company you know will likely have a replacement model for your device when you're ready to upgrade in a few years.  Just ask Sony tablet buyers about their upgrade options!

 

That and some of the stereotypes about high resale values are true... Apple gear definitely depreciates, but you'd be surprised at how much you can get.

I feel like the 120Hz display might use more power, decreasing battery life. But it's a tablet, so the battery is big and it might not affect it too much. Still I think it's a valid concern.

The refresh rate varies based on what's going on on-screen.
