So intel is causing quite a revolt among previously supportive youtubers

So far 4 of my go-to tech youtubers (Linus, Jayz2cents, GamersNexus and not as surprising Level1Techs) have all made opinion videos specifically dedicated to basically take a dump on intel's face for X299. The most brutal seems to be Linus but it seems like this is quite the push back. 

 

I feel this has been building up for a while but they were perhaps giving the benefit of doubt to intel to basically come up with something to dispel the rumors and not just confirm "Yep, we're fucking idiots, greedy, greedy idiots" so alas the floodgates are open now and everybody is jumping ship at the moment.

 

I can't recall everyone basically ganging up on intel quite like this for the past several years but I think it's quite healthy myself for competition's sake. I just wish AMD could have similarly explosive products lined up for the GPU division but then again the deal with Apple, all consoles, etc. Might just be enough for them to sustain that division too while they figure out something to 1 up Nvidia as well.

Intel deserves this. They have had a complete monopoly on the x86 market for quite some time now, jacking prices up for their profit. They didn't pay attention to their customers, and look where that has got them.

AMD, rock on. You are our last chance at any healthy competition.

The X299 launch is a total WTF moment. Intel has no idea what they're doing with this lineup. Just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.

 

I hate to admit it, but I think AMD caught them off guard (or rather, maybe they thought no one would care about AMD's new launches?)

i think intel probably thought the only people interested in AMD was their dedicated fanboy base.  Instead they are now seeing that the market is very interested in affordable, but still quite good, products. They've been a monopoly for so long that they don't know how to actually compete.

Agreed - I think the OEM interest really took them off guard. They probably thought that OEM's would still stick to Intel.

Honestly on the journalism side, I think it's a frustration that was already building with Kaby-Lake, and just kinda reached a climax here.  

 

Since we're getting to the point now where the only way to increase performance is going to be more cores (or better software), Intel is going to struggle in keeping an 'enthusiast' line, since more cores was the difference maker in the past, and just sort of a niche thing.  Ignoring AMD, Coffeelake will effectively render every CPU on the platform worthless to new buyers except the i9.  I think unless CPU architecture goes through another big overhaul, this will be the last "X" platform.

Being realistic though, its good a lot of influential people are being critical of intel right now. They should be put to shame for not only being so full of themselves about ryzen not being able to compete; but this scrapped together desperation move with X299 after threadripper was announced. 

 

Oh and they decided it was a good idea to use thermal paste on the heatspreader for 140w TDP CPUs. Intel's cooling solution better include a fire extinguisher.

Intel allowed AMD to catch up, especially in value. Then Intel allowed themselves to showcase their own outrageous prices. If anything, most of the disappointment seems to come from Intel not bothering with a generational leap, especially considering the price.

 

I guess my biggest problem here is that Intel had a good chance to leapfrog AMD but instead went on a path that made them look stupid.

I think the pie was already baked on the x299 stuff and why discard it when they got fresh ingredients waiting.

Think about it, the first thing after AMD was already set in stone man, they will double their efforts on the new shit in the pipeline. Maybe move up some backburner stuff.

 

Dont think for a minute they were twiddling their thumbs with minor improvements every Tick Tock cycle. They got their plans, their goals. Before its always an easy win, just do the same old same old, put the vehicle on cruise control. Now they gotta move some shit from the trunk up to the back seat, and the back seat stuff to the front seat. Instead of center console, back of the front seats, rear foot mat, front of back seat, top of back seat, back of back seat, rear window area.

 

I see big changes and massive steps coming from Intel, I believe it, it makes sense in my mind.

The X299 platform is a complete joke. Intel has gotten lazy. Just because Intel's budget is 10 times larger doesn't mean they know how to use it. They haven't had proper competition in so long they forgot how to compete.

yes, so decided rto hit back at AMD with a completely unaffordable product launch, with there 8 core still costing double if what the R7 1700, they have lost it. I mean they need to have massively better than the R7 1700 for that to work, especially as the thread rippers 10 looks like it will be cheaper than that 8 core as well. Intel has no idea what to do. They have also partnered up with all the tech retailers for TV ads to try and promote themselves so AMD doesn't completely destroy them when consumer products get release fully

According to some users on this very forums "Kabylake-x is for better OC's and to make it easier to get on the platform." I mean a simple price reduction on their product stack would have been a lot better than releasing 16 lane dual mem channel cpus that basically gives you an expensive as fuck z270 board

The X299 is kind of like a place holder for the time moment for Intel.  Next year going to be the very interesting year.  Zen 2 and Coffee Lake should be interesting.  Hopefully AMD get some more of the quirks worked out of Zen by then.  Should be some good competition for sure.

 

Though, I can understand Intel going with liquid cooling on the higher end chips.  If the 4.5GHz Turbo 3 specs are true, these are going to be toasty chips.

 

Anyway, I will wait for solid numbers, since I am toying with the idea of updating my F@H/BOINC rig's CPU and mobo.

I was really hoping Intel would have made Kaby Lake X cost less than Kaby Lake S and making up the lost profits on the more expensive chipset. KBX could have made sense as a stop-gap CPU if a 7740k was $250 instead of the $340 of a 7700k and a 7640k was $180 instead of the $230 of the 7640k. Then maybe the confusion of mixing the two platforms would have made sense.

Still doesn't make sense on that platform.... It disable too much features on the board and then it forces some manufacturers to leave off features that should be standard there

That's exactly what I was thinking: They not only saw him as taking point but could see if the video had immediate backlash only the opposite was true.

I might actually be tempted to go the 1800x route. Yet - I'm still undecided to be brutally honest. It's that or intel's mainstream Coffee Lake six cores that interest me at this point.
