Will Linus Media Group support 21:9 someday?

Given how like so many LMG workers have ultrawides themselves, including Linus, and the growing enthusiastic community with these neat screens, I start wondering; Why hasn't 21:9 aspect been featured yet on any of the videos? I'm not looking to be a complaining baby wanting my screen to be fully supported :P it's just a legit wondering what is the major points stopping the editing team to support it?

Well if it's in ultrawide, then wouldn't it look like ass for everyone who doesn't have an ultrawide?

Well it would look like movies, black bars on top and bottom, I do understand that YouTube/Google has been very lazy with giving actual appropriate support where you could potentially use ultrawide resolutions within the same video, I think the only "best way" around it in the quality view would be uploading a 16:9 video and the same video on 21:9 but I'm not sure if that has negative side when it comes to viewers/likes.

 

Then again in a way it is more unfair ultrawide get gigantic black bars on the sides (or use those extensions to fill entire screen but cut the edges) then 16:9 users have a not so bothering and smaller black bar on the bottom and top.

See what I said above. And maybe they could add a feature where you can change the aspect ratio? That'd probably be helpful.

Then you would have black bars at a movie theater which would be much more annoying. You can also have shots that are on IMAX cameras that have no black bars.

They did at least one 21:9 video (and it's great)

 

 

With the new RED camera they have (which can probably do up to 8K) they could some nice 21:9 videos, but the wide majority of people have 16:9 or even 16:10 monitors so I think at least until the percentage of people with smaller than 16:9 ratio increases, you won't see a lot more videos like this

 

The ultra wide aspect ratio is more suites for epic videos, cinema style videos etc not for videos like the ones LMG does

It depends on what the aspect ratio of most of their camera equipment is. If their equipment shoots at 16:9, then it's prudent to have the content be made at 16:9.

 

Even if you "overshoot", like record at 16:9 at a very large resolution but crop the top and bottom to fit 21:9 then downsample (like the oft suggested shoot at 8K, downsample for "5K"), you have to be very mindful of where the camera is pointing at all times. This is more work than anyone would care to do.

"21:9" Monitors are the same aspect ratio as cinema. 3440/1440 = 2.3888888888888888~. 21:9 is just the closest nice marketing number which can be related to the existing 16:9 standard.

Aspect ratio of films is an art style. Usually, 21:9 (amongst other ultra wide aspect ratios), is because the director wants to show more of the scenery around the actors, or vistas and such. Of course, they are many other possible reasons, hence an art direction.

Does Youtube support proper 21:9 content? I've seen a few videos that are filmed 21:9 and are pillar boxed and letter boxed.

I think what he meant was that when shooting movies they often use camera lens and cameras best suited for 2.35:1 and the film or digital format is in that aspect ratio. So it could be a director's choice to crop out some information and produce an aspect ratio different than 2.35:1 just because it may suite the movie better.

 

For example, see the aspect ratios video I linked above - i strongly suspect that Chronicle was recorded at 2.35:1 aspect ratio but they made it 16:9 to make it feel like it was recorded with cameras by the characters of the movie (to give that movie the recovered footage / documentary vibe)

Probably when 21:9 becomes adopted to the point where making videos to please that group doesn't affect their ability to grow their channel.

A bunch of people who bought a monitor without fully realizing the drawbacks now want to be catered to at the expense of 99% of the other viewers.

 

If you want a 21:9 video then you could download the video and crop it yourself. Just cut off some of the top and bottom.

 

 

 

As for why LTT probably hasn't done it, because they have no reason to.

If you look at their videos you will see it's mostly just glamor shots, charts or talking heads. All of those benefit from 16:9 compared to 21:9.

 

Glamor shots = Want you focused on the product, not what's around the product. Making the frame wider will just make it harder fitting the entire product in the frame while simultaneously not just filming a bunch of the table it's sitting on.

 

Charts = Usually tall or square, not wide. Making them wider can actually result in results looking inaccurate, such as a small difference of 1 FPS might look much larger in the bars (since the bars are longer overall).

 

Talking heads = You want the focus to be on the person talking, not what's going on around or behind them. You want as little background noise as possible, and making the frame wider makes this task harder.
