Amazon (USA) Lowers Its Free Shipping Threshold To Counter Walmart

You know how we have a free™ market™? Well, it just so happens that there is competition going on between Walmart and Amazon for your money because they know returning customers = more money for them. If this comes as a shock to you, well... Here's a gif just for you.

Quote

When Walmart ditched its Amazon Prime-style subscriptions and offered free two-day shipping for all orders over $35, it was a shot across the bow -- we might not compete directly, but we can still undercut you. Well, Amazon is responding in kind. Just a year after it hiked its free shipping minimum to $49, the online shopping giant has lowered that threshold back to $35. That won't deliver your goods any sooner (you still need Prime for that), but it could tip the balance if you're more interested in avoiding fees than getting your order in a hurry.

So you still have to have an Amazon Prime subscription to get free™ two-day shipping, but the minimum free™ standard shipping threshold as been lowered. At least in the USA anyways.

I know Amazon isn't too worried about Walmart taking away customers if what people on the internet say about Walmart is to be believed, but they may have been persuaded by the amount of items or orders placed at Walmart that are $35 and up who could have bought from Amazon instead which would be a hit or miss for Amazon profits. Amazon seems to be playing the long game, though. They're getting into more and more markets every day it seems like while still maintaining their usual customer base who simply want to just buy from their website.

I think they raised it last year. Or it depends on the items. It's $35 for me right now.

I noticed this the other day when my cart said i only needed like 9 dollars more to get free shipping when i thought it should say 19. I am pretty happy about it because i dont get prime because nothing i order i need in 2 days, and there are literally only 2 shows on prime streaming that interest me (man in the high castle and grand tour). Too much money for the subscription without enough benefit for now.

Plus since now they charge for sales tax (on a some things depending on the rules) a lot of people dont see a difference between amazon and walmart or best buy because they will price match and you can get it that day.

I'm wondering if the actual cost of shipping (not how much stores charge the customer, but its actual cost) is higher here than in other countries.

Well Amazon UK in Edinburgh and Glasgow (at the very least) uses their own courier (i.e. Amazon Logistics) which may be the reason why they're able to keep the minimum price quite low :P

Yay, the Dell I had no interest in can come from Walmart instead of Amazon once I drop my Prime membership due to Amazon's atrocious same-day delivery stooges who seem to never fail at failing.

Hah, yeah. There's $9 of stuff I want right now and I really don't need anything else. Le sigh. I suppose I'll just order a play and charge kit for my Xbox and be done with it.

Which is quite a bit lower than it'd have been in USD a little while ago...thanks Brexit ;)

You're very misled son. Either that, or have no idea what beer is available on the Canadian market.

Don't worry, Trump is working on that too ;)

Walmart still can't get over it's two innate problems.

It's employees, who are about as useful and helpful as tits on a bull, and their customers, who are about as pleasant to be around as a social justice college professor.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Yeah. Those were the days. When amazon shipped everything door to door via not surepost or the fed ex equivalent.

That has got to suck. Is it an exponential increase in packages?

Ohhh yeah. during the week we do (at my station at least) 3-4 pallets a day and then on Sunday we combine the city to the 2 hubs and it can be 30-50 pallets at one hub and 40-60 at the other.

Christmas is oh so worse.. double or triple that number.

edit*

we throw avg 1600-2000  packages a day at my station [not all amazon], during Christmas that would be 3-5000.
