Axanar lawsuit settled, it's going to suck

Ugh. I'm seriously mad about this.

giphy.gif

Quote

Stand down from battle stations. Star Trek rights holders CBS and Paramount have seen the logic of settling a copyright suit against Alec Peters, who solicited money on crowdfunding sites and hired professionals to make a YouTube short and a script of a planned feature film focused on a fictional event — a Starfleet captain's victory in a war with the Klingon Empire — referenced in the original 1960s Gene Roddenberry television series. Thanks to the settlement, CBS and Paramount won't be going to trial on Stardate 47634.44, known to most as Jan. 31, 2017.

According to a joint statement, "Paramount Pictures Corporation, CBS Studios Inc., Axanar Productions, Inc. and Alec Peters are pleased to announce that the litigation regarding Axanar’s film Prelude to Axanar and its proposed film Axanar has been resolved. Axanar and Mr. Peters acknowledge that both films were not approved by Paramount or CBS, and that both works crossed boundaries acceptable to CBS and Paramount relating to copyright law."

While some of you might be rejoicing, hold your horses. The movie we wanted, will not be coming out. Instead, what we will get will be a neutered version of the film.

Quote

The case is now ending, which probably means no one will ever get to see the several-hour-long highlight reel of episodes and movies being prepared by attorneys for CBS and Paramount for the purpose of introducing jurors to the franchise's intricate universe.

Instead, when Axanar comes out, it will look different.

"Axanar and Mr. Peters have agreed to make substantial changes to Axanar to resolve this litigation, and have also assured the copyright holders that any future Star Trek fan films produced by Axanar or Mr. Peters will be in accordance with the 'Guidelines for Fan Films' distributed by CBS and Paramount in June 2016," states the parties' joint announcement of a settlement.

What are these guidelines you ask? Well, there's a lot to them. But I am going to focus on one part of it. Nevermind all the "no one can profit off of it, or be compensated for their services in making the film" crap that will utterly and completely ruin the film. ONTOP of all of that, there is this

Taken from the StarTrek.com website, guidelines for fan films:

Quote

The fan production must be family friendly and suitable for public presentation. Videos must not include profanity, nudity, obscenity, pornography, depictions of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or any harmful or illegal activity, or any material that is offensive, fraudulent, defamatory, libelous, disparaging, sexually explicit, threatening, hateful, or any other inappropriate content. The content of the fan production cannot violate any individual’s right of privacy.

For me, this ruins the entire damned film. I was excited for this movie, because maybe, just maybe, we would finally have something gritty and raw in the Star Trek universe. Something that felt a bit more real because the characters portrayed would actually behave the way real people would. Instead, the best we will get is more of the same philosophical grandstanding that Star Trek is famous/infamous for.

While yes, that could be in there anyways, and that is, to an extent what Star Trek is about, I would argue...... It's getting old. Lets see something that has people behaving a bit more realistically. What the hell does CBS care if no one is allowed to profit from it, and CBS and Paramount are not actually involved?

This was just stupid. I was already going to not watch and boycott the new Star Trek series for a variety of reasons, but this just gives me all the more reason to do so. To quote Bones: "It's dead, Jim".

Yes, I am blatantly biased here. No this isn't exactly tech related, but it's definitely something I think worth being covered.

I was excited too after seeing Prelude. But man... the massive egoism that came out during all this shite I doubt I could've watched Axanar proper without feeling the need to throw up.
Its a shame... so much negativity in the Trek community now that it almost feels like there's no point in finishing off the script for my own fan episodeish thing. Aside from the vaguely restrictive(though still workable) guidelines I really think anything new is just going to met with so much bile and BS that its become totally worthless.

Yup.

Viacom has always been this shite, though. Going back all the way to 2007 with a big fucking lawsuit against Google (yes, it had some merit, but a lot of it was kinda bullshit as a lot of the lawsuit also involved videos that were not just straight clips at all) even to today.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Is that really the right conversion?  I don't think it is... ಠ_ಠ

I'm not a fan of Star Wars or Star Trek, but if the director wasn't allowed to direct something creatively (to a sample group's approval), there is something wrong.

Is this the case here?

No, and change that to "owners" then.

I feel it's a combination of that, and "well we aren't making it, and wouldn't profit from it.....so fuck them, let's ruin it to protect our intellectual property from someone with a fresh idea, so that we don't have to put any effort into what we're doing".

I REALLY hope their new series tanks worse than FireFly.

I think they felt that Axanar would give the audience a new twist on the Star Trek universe, and that perhaps they felt their new show would be threatened by it. And since their new show will only be available on their dumbass streaming service, that would mean a loss of profit.

Why do people writing stories like this always feel the need to include random references to the topic, but yet they never care enough to actually get it right, and it just makes them look bad since surely they must realize the people who are going to read such an article are the ones who would notice such a thing, and care about it no less.

I can't blame them here for the case, the moment it started being a thing people profited from they had all the right to push their ownership of the license. Traditionally they have been incredibly liberal with their license and while this is going to suck for more reasonable projects(Like Star Trek: Renegades), that's all on Axanar

Right, I could be wrong here haven't been following this, but didn't they guy like create a job out of this project from the funding and give it to himself and therefore profit off of it?  If that's the case then they had every right to shut it down, it sucks but breaking the law is breaking the law.   Again I'm not sure about that but I thought I read that somewhere awhile ago I could be wrong.

He pretty much set out to make a profit, yes. He also aimed to set up an entirely functional and permanent studio.
