HDDs on the Ropes, Samsung Predicts SSD Price Collision as NVMe Takes Over

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/668187-hdds-on-the-ropes-

  • Samsung outlined its focus on Google Analytics for marketing purposes last year

    • Pointed out that recent Google searches for “SSD upgrades” outweighed searches for “CPU upgrades”

  • Cellphone industry has grown 19.1% in the last five years, where SSDs have grown by 54% over the last five years

  • HDDs have a pricing problem for low-capacity applications

    • SSDs don’t have to beat HDDs on price versus capacity front

    • Price just needs to be ‘close enough’ for an SSD to become a viable HDD alternative

    • Popular 256GB SSD capacity is already close to the price of a 1TB HDD

    • Samsung predicts price of 256GB SSD to sink below a 1TB HDD in mid-2017, 512GB to follow in 2020

  • Roughly a $40 price floor that HDDs can’t get under

    • This is the minimum dollar amount needed to provide the HDD casing, motors, heads, and other components

      • Regardless of how low the capacity is

  • SSDs can scale well below $40 in smaller quantities

    • SSDs have already displaced HDDs in 40% in new notebooks

    • Samsung predicts it will reach 55% in 2018

    • SVP Joseph Young wrote the following in a filing with the FCC last week:

“Imagine you are out for a walk and experience a sudden, irresistible craving for Oreo® cookies. You only want to spend two dollars, which means that you will be able to buy a two-pack or maybe even a four-pack but for sure you cannot get the family size of over 40 cookies. For that many, you have to spend more. Of course, it would be nice if your two dollars bought you the right to eat an unlimited number of cookies, but you know that is not the way our economy works.”

I don't think the ASA thing does apply to demos at PAX, or like Watch_Dogs or anything like that. The reason the ASA has gotten involved in No Man's Sky is because those old videos are being shown right now on the game's page. They are being advertised right now as things in that game, when that's not the case at all. It's one thing to have a sample of the game years in advance that ends up different in the final release, but to keep that on the current sale page and claim that that is what the game still currently is, that's different.

The Hard disk pricing thing is quite interesting too. I am still using my 2TB HDD from 2011 for my slow, mass storage, and I have a big SSD because as much as I care about boot times, I care at least as much as load times in games. What I've found is that using an SSD for games this way, and photos, documents, videos, etc all being put on the HDD means that the space I need for my slow storage is much, much less than my fast storage. It's actually to the point where it's worth me considering removing the HDD entirely.

At the moment I have 734GB used on my SSD, but only 408GB used of my HDD. When 2 or 3TB SSDs become sanely priced, I might just do away with all of the storage I have at the moment and use a single SSD.

Jayz2cents has one of those defective washing machines. Some time last year there was an optional recall notice sent out for it.

It had to do with the drum not being self balancing. (despite advertising it)

Cloud storage is a bad choice for most people, as it lacks convenience, functionality, and performance.

None of the more affordable cloud storage solutions can provide the functionality of even the most basic $100 NAS box, and for the vast majority of users, they also can't offer the same performance.

Furthermore, while many cloud storage services, can offer lower upfront costs, they are all more expensive in the long run.

For example, with a NAS, a DRM free library of games can be archived in their installed format (simply copying and pasting the install folder to the NAS), and the games can be launched directly from the NAS (by multiple PC s on the network simultaneously). While load speeds will not be as good as a local copy, it is convenient for when you randomly feel like messing around in an old game.

When I needed to rebuild my PC and do a fresh install, I was able to do a format and a fresh install (I do monthly backups onto bare drives for storage in a safe, as well as manual backups before a reformat), and be back up and running with my favorite apps within about 3 hours (due to windows update taking the most time), and that is also because the hard drive that I backed up too, has a read and write speed of around 160MB/s.

If I used a cloud backup service, I would spend weeks recovering all of the data.

Another major risk of relying on the cloud, is that you are at the mercy of the company. For most people, the data is worth more than the hardware, and the companies know that. it is why companies that make cloud reliant hardware are quicker to change their seems of service, privacy policies, and pricing for services. They have all of the leverage and the ability to hold your hardware and data ransom. You spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on cloud reliant security cameras, and the company will have an easier time increasing the monthly fee because they know that your only options are to pay more, or brick all of the hardware. No alternatives means that the customer is more likely to accept a worst deal.

If you do something like store 4TB worth of data to the cloud, and spend months uploading all of that data, what do you do if the company suddenly devices that price is going up. you are stuck accepting it spending many months uploading to a different service, while continuing to pay for the old service to maintain some redundancy during the transfer, or stopping the old service and remaining unprotected for the months of uploading for the new transfer. Overall, it becomes a major hassle.

On the other hand, If western digital decided to triple their prices, It will not impact the 4TB drives that I currently have. A policy change will not impact my current drives.

For less money than the cloud options for storing multiple terabytes of data, I have slowly expanded the storage to allow for more redundancy (for the goal of monthly snapshots to go back a few months). Higher upfront costs but it is cheaper in the long run (bunch of bare drives that I use with an eSATA dock, as well as a NAS for backups every 3 minutes).

Furthermore, the local solution is data cap friendly.

Considering Linus's issues with setting up the stream is it time for a sponsored build / assisted project of a proper WAN show set, ie proper dedicated pc, sound and mixer setup, mics & stands, cameras etc?
