We accidentally blew past our 151 PC license once, because there were over a dozen computers taking up 2 (or even 3) licenses each. I'm unsure if any other Enterprise Grade AV has this as an issue.

I assume it's simply that when you uninstall the software, it doesn't send a "I'm gone!" packet to the server. I'd guess it's probably an issue with most of them.

It's quite good as a backup/manual scanner. I would never trust it as the primary solution though. Fortunately, if you're using Windows 8+, you've got Windows Defender built in anyway.

Absolutely true, but to a degree. Some AV are just better at protecting your PC than others are, from how often they get updates, how they protect your PC to how much and which threats they can (are) block(ing). It's exactly at those moments when you make a mistake and are about to get infected for them to step up. 

Needless to say that you are never 100% secure, unless you are offline all the time. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

In my opinion and experience, it's (one of) the best out there. I'm not using SS but "only" NOD32. Never had issues and I've been using it since 3rd edition. Been using it in combo with Ad-Aware but I've switched to MBAB and have been using them side by side for years. I've had few issues with Norton, BitDefender, Kaspersky, AVG (only free), Sophos, Trend Micro and a few more, but this has never let me down. Not a single issue.

Of course, there are people that will disagree, but I'm not moving from something that's been working perfectly for years.

I used Kaspersky before.  Worked great for a few years.  One day, it fucked up an update, and somehow was able to kill an EVGA Classified x58 board.  The software started to just randomly detect new threats, and killed the board.  I swear by Eset + MBAM and all the other MBAM assets, as well as privacy badger and adblockers for every site I go to.  Virus free for a long, long time.

I haven't tried either in YEARS. I recall getting pissed off at both of them for one reason or another... To be honest I don't even have a third party AV installed on my PC right now. I just use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 Home Premium (some might argue that that is third party, but it's a microsoft product, so i don't consider it to be). The only reason I don't download one is that I only download software from their official sources (or mirrors) and I tried MBAM once and it flagged ProduKey as malware.

Current "Rig": AMD FX-6200, AMD Radeon HD 7570, 240GB Crucial BX200, 1TB Seagate Barracuda OEM Drive, HP Micro-ATX case (from trash heap haha), Windows 7 Home Premium, Gigabyte Angelica2 AM3+ motherboard.

I personally stopped using Avast after their big update to provide support for Windows 8 completely killed many W7 installs lol. It had a clean easy to use UI that even my grandmother could use....

I've used AVG before. It suited well. Though for quite some time now I use ESET IS with MBAM + (Zemana AntiLogger sometimes)

The thing is, the bit where an AV can fuck up hardware or Windows installs could happen to any company. No matter how tight their QA / bugtest team is, they will slip one day.

I think ad blockers + privacy software + Malwarebytes (not even the full version, just run a scan weekly or create your own periodic scans via the task scheduler) is enough for everyday users who know not to go into shady bits of the internet.

 

For the last 5 years in this computer, every single threat detection has been a false positive. I feel secure :)

As long as the user isn't a complete idiot, Defender is fine (edit: for most people). If the user is retarded and visits sites they shouldn't and downloads shit off of shady piracy sites they get what they deserve if they don't have better protection.

Personally and on all machines I build/Fix I put a combo of Malwarebytes and Bitdefender. Avast I've found is OK but doesn't do everything I would like it to. AVG I used to run for YEARS. Then I started getting so many false positives, removed files that were fine, and the fact that they sell your data outright I decided to just be done with it.

At one point, I've even seen a non-techie swoon to buy a prebuilt cause of the free 'good' AV on the bundle. I chuckled at the sales rep and told the costumer to buy something else.
