What to do with an old PC?

Superheroguy89

Hey Everyone,

This sunday I am building a new computer. This left me with the problem of what to do with my old computer. Although it is prebuilt, it is not really useless and is easily running my two monitors and getting right around 30 fps. What do you guys recommend I do with this PC? I was thinking I could turn it into a rendering machine for my animations that I create so what do you think of that idea.

Thanks

you would get better rendering performance if you sold that old PC and used the money to buy better parts for your new PC

Specs? If it's somewhat decent PC it could be used as a home theater PC or if it can stream games at 60fps 1080p, if you wanna get into that it could be decent, by streaming like how some streamers have two PCs and use one to stream a game off their other.

Ya depending on the specs you could use it for your rendering and when its not doing anything you could use it for Folding, Bitcoin or Boinc

if its too old to really sell and get any decent spending money to go towards a new build I always turn them into XBMC / Kodi machines, a simple server, or occasionally If its really old Ill put a really light duty OS like linux on it and just use it to test around.

Steal a harddrive out of it for storage, maybe the RAM, you don't need super high-speed RAM anyway because it doesn't make a noticeable performance difference. If there's a decent amount there, put it in your new build. Maybe use it as a Home Theater PC. Give it to a relative/friend who may need it. Turn it into a fishtank. Set it on fire. Sell it. Use it alongside your new rig for running programs that you don't want to run on your main rig to save performance. Turn it into a makeshift server. Use it for rendering. Cloud computing. The possibilities are endless.

Smart tv's sort of do the job of a HTPC, depending on what you plan to do you may not need one.

Use it as a steam link to play games on the TV in the living room. Stick a cheap SSD and steamOS on it and it'll perform pretty great for its use.

I used my old spare parts into a NAS.  Nothing fancy, just something for everyone to dump files into over the network and stream multimedia as well.  It works great!

Maybe throw in a couple of hard drives into your old PC and use it as a NAS.
