Noteworthy builds that didn't make the list:As I said before, I want this to be a inspirational topic for people who want to build their own server.

But not everyone needs 10TB+, so here are some noteworthy small builds that are either just awesome, or they are elegant solutions for someone who wants a bit more then a NAS but doesn't need a huge server.

  • MG2R 6TB K'nex case build, YES!, NO TYPO!, A K'NEX BUILD!
  • cushy91 2TB HP MicroServer, Elegant start for every beginner.

I also added my LackRack to my post as was requested by RandomNOOB (requested on IRC)

I will completely rebuild my server once I've done some upgrades to my main desk.

I sold some of my older drives and am probably going to buy some WD SE if the price is right.

Also, have you guys seen this one? http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/24161-new-z87-board-with-26-sata-ports/

I might pick that one up, saves me the trouble of looking for a good RAID card.

It depends, if hardware RAID is supported, I pick hardware over software any day of the week.

Much appreciated. Goes along the lines of a topic I posted a while back, so having a central topic for many different setups helps immensely. I'm going to plan out a ZFS setup with, ideally, 15-30+TB of storage.

Don't forget guys, with the new tagging system, if you have questions about someones build and you post it here, let them know by "tagging" them. Basically add an @ symbol followed by their usename - they shoudl get a notification if they have it enabled.

Some food for thought...

I notice no one seems to have a Win8/Server 2012 solution yet using storage spaces.

Any body test it yet? How many disks and storage size?

I ask because I want to see what others have experienced without influencing them. I have done extensive testing on it and a lot of reading up on it...

I've tested Storage spaces on my server and it is very slow. I can't recommend it to anyone. Now i use plain raid on M1015 - maybe i'll go to FreeNAS route.

Unfortunately right now, 4P folding gear is sucking up all my cash, rather then 4TB hard drive upgrades. :)
