Do you have a component or peripheral that goes with you from build to build?

Marbo

For me it's my mouse. A Logitech G300. Everything else has changed 3-4 times since I got it. I know it's not the best out there but it's been with me for so long (relatively speaking for tech)

I couldn't imagine using another now. I even find myself at work trying to press buttons that aren't there.

I'm even considering looking for a nos one now, as back up, just in case it dies on me.

so far my case, PSU and storage has moved to 2 full and 2 half rebuilds.

I expect my keyboard will outlive them all.

I think the oldest part connected to my PC is my webcam (C270 Logitech), that's the only part that was used with any of my PC-s since 2009 or 2010.

I used to have one those. I sent it out to a friend in Mexico as they were mega expensive over there at the time, that's if you could find one. She still uses it now as far as I'm aware.

Funnily enough, I've got the same webcam and I've had that since around 2011-2012... Possibly back when I was on my old AMD Phenom II 955BE system.. So it's been through that one and AMD FX platform and onto my current system.

Aside from that... perhaps a couple of flash drives... got an 8GB and a 16GB that I've had for so long and still use occasionally to this day for setting up a windows install, flashing the bios and transferring the odd file here and there.

System 1: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, Ryzen 5 2600X, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz, Sapphire 5700XT, 250GB NVME WD Black, 2x Crucial MX5001TB, 2x Seagate 3TB, H115i AIO, Sharkoon BW9000 case with corsair ML fans, EVGA G2 Gold 650W Modular PSU, liteon bluray/dvd/rw.. NO RGB aside from MB and AIO pump. Triple 27" Monitor setup (1x 144hz, 2x 75hz, all freesync/freesync 2)

System 2: Asus M5 MB, AMD FX8350, 16GB DDR3, Sapphire RX580, 30TB of storage, 250GB SSD, Silverstone HTPC chassis, Corsair 550W Modular PSU, Noctua cooler, liteon bluray/dvd/rw, 4K HDR display (Samsung TV)

I played the phenom lottery back then and won. Had 550BE and managed to unlock the extra cores.

I would have been gutted if I was stuck with the two.

Yeah I had the good 955 BE with either the C2 or C3 stepping that was a bit of an OC beastie. 3.2Ghz running at almost 3.8Ghz on air for it's entire life. If I'd have played with the voltages or gone for a water cooled setup... some people were hitting 4Ghz and upwards. But I did mine on stock v.

I've also just remember that I have 2 peripherals that I've had since the early 2000's.  An MS multimedia keyboard Model 1.0A that's currently attached to my mediaserver, and the original MS 5 button intellimouse that's currently being used on my mums PC after her wireless mouse started acting up. Both of those have to be around 17-18yrs old and working perfectly.

I've had my PC build 6 or 7 years now and I've swapped just about everything out.
Except for my case. It's a CM Storm Trooper, and the thing has all the features I want. I have yet to find a case with a similar feature set that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

So you went from PII to FX and then Ryzen? Seems not just our builds are similar, but the way we got to them...

I totally forgot about flash drives. I have an 256MB one that works, from the Pentium III era, I use it for bios flashing and such. XD

Still a decent webcam, 720p and quite good image.

I also had an PII 550BE but my third core was faulty so I had to use it as a tripple core.

I'm the same with with my mice (plural) and keyboard. I currently have a G700s, with a G500 on standby/backup, and the day my G710+ keyboard dies will be a sad day, as I have not found anything on the market that comes close to replacing it with the same Cherry MX Brown switches. I rock a G610 Brown keyboard at work, which is close, but not the same thing.

Back when I repaired computers in a retail setting, the technician who trained me had snagged one of Logitech's fabled Red MX518 mice for the tech PC, and while I'd never have the conscience to steal anything from any workplace, I almost wish I had, because that mouse was hands down the best mouse I've ever used.

Other than that, I guess you could say my current Samsung 250GB 840 EVO SSD has followed me through 2 laptops & 2 desktop builds, and will probably follow me through another desktop build, since I really don't need more capacity than that for Windows & my commonly used applications. (Games are stored on a separate dual 500GB software-based SSD RAID 0-read, 1-write array, although I'm tempted to replace those with dual 2TB drives as prices continue to fall, so we'll see.)

My display. I'm still using a low-quality, budget BenQ from 2010 or 2009 -- can't remember the manufacturing-date right now -- as I haven't been able to justify to myself buying a new one yet. I'll probably continue to use this for a while longer, unless I can find someone willing to sell me something better on the cheap or it goes completely kaputt.

I've become quite the expert on fixing random issues with the G710+.

- Key chattering - fixed.

- Keycaps wearing out or crumbling - fixed

- large zone illumination control key died (membrane, died in the "off" position) - found a way to control the illumination through software

- random maintanance (cleaning, replacing worn out o-rings, etc)

Eeeyyy, I approve! I've got a G500, that I've been using for years and years -- the pattern on the plastic has all worn out already from use -- and a G710 (though the non-plus version) myself. Logitech makes the good shit.

The random maintenance I have covered, as taking apart keyboards & washing them is easy peasy for me. :) Also added o-rings to my G610 Brown switch because it didn't come with them. However, I'd be interested in knowing how you're controlling the LED lighting through software, since Logitech doesn't provide an official means for this, as well as if you know exactly what keycap set replaces the G710+, only because I keep hearing about the bottom row being non-standard.

My eyesight was the reason I upgraded about 18 months ago. Went from two 21.5" LG displays to the one LG which I can still manage on for media, and a 27" HP cheap display for the rest of my stuff.

I'm getting old. It's must be funny watching me use the 27" varifocals on, head tilted back slightly panning across the screen.

My oldest parts are my case Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01 and my 5.25" bay LCD display VLSystem L.I.S 2 Premium (it works perfect on Windows 10 with old drivers for WinXP), bought more than 10 years ago (maybe 14 years ago) :)

The configuration (CPU+MB+RAM) has been changed 4 times.

Oh well, you're not alone with bad eyesight. We can be eyeglasses-buddies! ?

However, I'd be interested in knowing how you're controlling the LED lighting through software, since Logitech doesn't provide an official means for this, as well as if you know exactly what keycap set replaces the G710+, only because I keep hearing about the bottom row being non-standard.

As for keycaps, I've used the regular MX compatible ones, but I've only replaced some of the caps (those that had issues). I don't think the bottom row is not standard, but I might be wrong.

I went from a 21.5" Philips 1080p to a 32" 1440p cause the 32" 1440p has about the same size pixels as 24" 1080p. 21" 1080p was trouble; POOR EYESIGHT. +6 +8, strabismus, 50% vision clarity on right ... XD

I think keyboards and mice are like that old pair of comfy shoes. Find the right ones and we're going to wear them till they fall off our feet.

i've switched around mice a bit. I went from a bunch of cheap wireless to a g100s to a cosair saber RGB.

I killed all the wireless and mostly killed the g100.

my keyboard tho, Rosewell RK-9000V2 with chery mx blacks. at the time the cheapest full size board with heavy switches.

Not at the moment no.

Pretty much replaced everything in the last three years. Only my wired ancient Xbox controller is still with me, had that for a long time.

I will see in about 5 years as that is when my current MoBo, CPU and RAM will likely need an upgrade (or when I want to use them for my son (only 4 atm) to build his first PC and I get the new shinnys).
