Radeon VII or RTX 2080

vii... it's cheaper, has double the vram, higher speed, generally edges it out and is not that much louder

 

and you get native freesync

Got the chance to get ether a radeon VII for $685.99 usd or an EVGA rtx 2080 xc gaming for $769.00 usd. Now I have no real use for the ray tracing and I'll be using this 2700x on a 1440p monitor. Just wanted some opinions cause on the one hand the rtx has slightly better perf but the radeon is cheaper and delivers close to the same perf.

Id get the VII, its almost $100 off

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Easy.. Radeon VII. I got mine liquid cooled and it runs just as good as my 2080 did. I like AMD software A LOT more as well..

I will say the radeon is a better buy in the long run , I bet they will have Radeonrays on when navy is out.

 

Those 16g of vram is a must and you have hbcc also you can even have more vram allocated.

 

For me the radeon software is very good and easy to use

TBH, it depends on what you're doing. If you are doing stuff like content creation, then Radeon VII is your best bet with the 16 GBs of HBM2 Memory, but if all you do is gaming, then RTX 2080 is the better choice.

Radeon VII or wait for Radeon VII Navi and the original will probably lower in price. Nvidia is rumored to be lowering the price of their cards near or after the release of Navi to be a little more competitive. Either one you choose you can get a good freesync monitor instead of g-sync and save money there.

If they were the same price I'd still opt for the 2080... but if the 100 bucks is an welcome saving then yeah no brainer.

Works with my RTX 2060 and XG2402, but it's one of the recommended ones I believe. Had it since my RX 580 though, I didn't purposely buy it for the g-sync compatibility. AMD has their issues too. Such as dual monitors randomly flickering for no reason. Happened on my HD 7950, 7970, RX 580, and yes I made sure to use DDU and use fresh drivers. No driver update fixed it. Happened with any dual monitor setup between the 5 monitors I have available. Got the RTX 2060 and it stopped happening. Weird.

Luke you're not understanding how it works, the FreeSync standard is dictated by the Monitor, some monitors have bad FreeSync implementations that will suck on both AMD and nVidia, while if the implementations is good you'll get wider refresh rate range and it'll "just work".

 

The GPU only has to support the standard but what dictates on how good it works is the display not the GPU, the support to the technology on AMD and now nVidia is the same.

 

The whole "G-Sync Certified" Freesync Display is because we do have a lot of entry level monitors that uses shitty FreeSync implementations but in these cases it's shitty on AMD just as much.

I would go with the VII for the sole reason that you don't need to deal with Nvidia's drivers/software crap. It used to be decent, but god it's just so awful now. 

 

And Radeon Relive kicks ass! And AMD doesn't force you to create and login to an account just to use it, like Nvidia does.

I'm glad you picked up the Radeon VII. I had two Geforce GTX 1080 Asus Strix in my computer, but SLI was terrible. I ended up getting a VII for $650 with The Division 2 and World War Z (two games I was going to get anyways) and I could not justify the $150 higher price tag on the 2080. I also looked at the 2080 Ti, but it was twice the price for 12% higher performance. I was able to use Wattman and have 3 overclocks that I can use depending on the temperature (it gets hot here in TX). 2000mhz at 1150mv and 1150mhz ram, 1900mhz at 1150mv and 1150mhz ram, and the one I use for extended gaming, 1850mhz at 1111mv and 1150mhz ram. It runs 4k at 60+ fps on most games, but since I went to an Acer X273 Nitro monitor (27 inch 1ms 4K 120hz w/HDR 400 or 144hz w/o HDR/Freesync) with 48hz-120hz Freesync range, I run at 2K. I can't tell a difference like I could with my Phillips Momentum 43 inch 4K monitor (it had HDR 1000, but the power supply died and it seems like a common issue). 

 

I am happy with my card, but it is the most I have ever spent on a single GPU ever.
