Kansas considering bill requiring distributors to provide porn filtering

Kansas is considering a bill that will require Internet device distributors to provide filtering of porn. There would be a 'tax' to remove this software ($20) and you would have to be 18+ to remove it.

 

While the intent seems good, it is too far-reaching. Also blocked would be any instructions on how to remove the filtering, presumably including other operating systems. Management of the software would fall on the distributors, with a fine for failure to comply.

Something tells me this bill won't get very far.  Just from a constitutional perspective, barring people from accessing all porn unless they pay up sounds like a violation of the First Amendment.  And yes, forcing every internet device maker who sells in the state to include filtering would be onerous, to put it mildly.

Not letting people visit some sites infringing on the 1st Amendment,and an ISP telling you to pay up for porn has to be some kind of violation of privacy.

I don't agree with the intent either, it's too overreaching and a stupid "think of the kids" excuse for censorship.

This is why we need Net Neutrality, now they are free to fuck us over by hiding behind a paywall some content of the internet... What a joke.

And of course, they are trying to pass it off as a way to stop predators from accessing child porn in their arguments... As if that would work. A "smart" predator would just use an older device, load it up with a VPN (or 5), along with that linux distro for privacy(tails?), use TOR and other crap like that to go under the radar.
ll in all it will just hurt little Timmy trying to watch porn and learn some form of sexual education, since lord knows he ain't getting that in School or by his parents.

Not to that degree!

 

And I would say the First Amendment might apply for a simple reason: by requiring porn filtering on all devices, it basically silences porn creators who serve people in the state.

Just because someone stands up in support of something, doesn't mean they necessarily have an ulterior motive. I support the fight against breast cancer, racism, and child abuse (in any form), and yet here I am a middle-aged white man with no kids... sometimes things are just common sense for people to take a fight against, not least of which is online censorship, that everyone knows will have widespread repercussions in other areas of the internet too.

 

I am a big believer in free speech, even the people that speak absoloute nonsense should have a say. Hell we have so called "leaders" of the world that regularly seem like they have words spouting forth from their nether regions... yet they are still in office. Unfortunately we can't pick and choose whom should have free speech, it kind of goes against the whole point of it.

I wish that governments would seriously come up with a different line though, trying to use a "catch all" approach, and "hey if innocent people end up paying us money, and we can convince enough parents that this is "for the children", then that's fine".

 

Seriously world, stop trying to block everyone's enjoyment of whatever activities they find fun, just to try and weed out some sickos... I'm not against you finding and incarcerating those people, just do it another way that doesn't inconvenience everyone else. Thank you :)
