Chrome may soon break Ad-Blockers

The API currently used by adblockers will be removed, and replaced with an API that does not allow adblockers to prevent ads from loading.

So it will not be possible to block ads (at least not before loading first) anymore. Not even if you spend more CPU time or memory.

Yep. If you disable just all tracking scripts on websites they usually load 5-10 times faster than with all of it on.

It's pretty insane that for each clock cycle your processor works to load actual content on a website, it wastes 5 just processing a bunch of tracking scripts that are used to harvest personal information from you.

 

USA Today has 124 scripts by default.

With the standard uBlock filters, 37 are loaded.

The USA Today GDPR compliant website has 0 scripts that load.

I'm very glad Microsoft decided to kill EdgeHTML. It was a colossal waste of time, money and other resources if you ask me.

I am very disappointed that they did not replace it with Firefox (Gecko) though.

 

They had the opportunity to level the playing field a little bit, but instead chose to give Google a boost in their market dominance.

 

Samsung are currently working with Mozilla on the development of Servo, which is basically a brand new browser engine, except for the JS engine and 2D graphics library. Hopefully Samsung will switch their browser to use that once they feel it's ready for production deployment. That would move a quite large chunk of "Chrome" users to "Firefox".

A good JS engine is basically what Firefox lacks, why don't they work on that though?

Got to be fucking joking right. I get spammed enough advert crap as it is, even with my ad block switch on, ive got to suffer from these PARASITE companies throwing offers at me all the time and tbh most of these offers aint worth the paper or shall i say screen real estate they are printed/pixel imprinted on.

It's expected from such cancerous company anyway so nothing new. I will uninstall Google Chrome anyway when they break it.

That's BS. Firefox's JS engine is very fast and perfectly on par with Chrome's V8. Sometimes even faster. Not to mention Firefox actually renders webpages faster. Chrome, every time I tried it felt like a slow pig. Sure, it always had high scores in pure JS benchmarks, but when becnhmarked on complete pages, it was a fat slow pig. The fact it loads all the tracking junk isn't helping it either.

I had the complete opposite result when I tested both of them in JS-intensive sites (this includes non-Google sites)

The devtools is horrible too, and they won't fix it either.

 

Also, remember the Looking Glass extension? Cliqz?

 

Oh well, I'll just have to hope they keep the APIs or something. Brave supports extensions now, maybe I'll check that out

Those will probably break too. if ads were like the ones on LTT then no one would use an adblocker. But they are annoying auto play videos and drop down banners. Some people also block ads to save data as an autoplay video destroys data plans

It can be done with either a VPN or could have it public facing and just change DNS settings on mobile devices.

Hosts file can be circumvented....  Blocking DNS in router isnt.

That can also be circumvented by manually looking up with a different DNS server than the OS provides

Even if they hard code IP's into their code then it will be caught by pfblockerng.... Try to use non-standard DNS port and you will get caught by snort. Checkmate....

Ads in the browser won't be able to circumvent the hosts file, and if there's an application trying something like that then you shouldn't run it anyway

Its not so common since ppl still use them despite the strong spyware properties. BTW adblocking is a thing in win10 too (which is insane, ads in a paid os....).

You should see solitaire on win10 home.  Can't use it without an active internet connection.  Can't use it without getting hit by several ads(both video and image ads), or having to buy it from windows store cause apparently it doesn't come with the OS anymore.

 

Personally I am going to rip the exe from an older version of windows and use that in the near future, and might start looking at how to go about removing that whole Xbox games mode thing entirely.
