Everyone has some dark secret about tech that you are just too embarrassed to talk about. Maybe you're still using a trackball mouse (gasp!), or maybe you still run Windows Vista!

If everybody can get these things off their chest here at once, we'll all feel better I'm sure ;)

If you're trying to run a speedtest at the same time you're doing other task (like watching Youtube), oh yeah you'll see slower speeds. That's not a network problem, it's just capacity being used by the other tasks. Now if you're seeing slower speedtest even after you stop your other tasks, that could be an actual issue.

If it's that second case, it sounds like either faulty network equipment on your end (old modem?) or ISP throttling.

That'd be fine for what you're wanting to do. I can't personally speak for the Synology software they put on the thing, but it definitely has the functionality to act as a network share.

I don't know what kind of files you need to rename, but there are a few things I found especially useful in the program.
Insert text/numbering at beginning/end/position "n" of file Delete characters in first/last/from position "n" to "m" Rename "*string*" to "*whatever*"

Click the memory column again. You're sorting from least to greatest, rather than the other way around.

    1) A fresh OS will almost always be faster.
    2) Most of the same regedits should work, but you should probably check before doing them again.

rustikles got a reaction from Zeke in Safe to use drive letter A?
Nope, no issues that I can think of. As you said, it's more of a legacy windows thing to leave "A" reserved for a floppy drive. Any new devices or network volumes can just be mounted to any of the remaining drive letters. By the same token, there's also no particular reason TO assign your SD-card reader to "A" other than where it shows up in the order of devices.

There's a toggle you can use now to actually change where file explorer opens to. I don't have a Win10 machine in front of me right now....

I think it's right click on the "quick access" menu that's shown on the left of file explorer and you should be able to find a settings menu. The very first top option is "Where to open file explorer" which you can change to "My Computer".

EDIT: This should do it too: Link Link2

During the update process, it'll probably give you a prompt to either "Save everything", "Save files, not settings", or "Save nothing". It's up to you if you want a fresh install or keep your programs any files. Ideally it should keep all your games and programs, if you select that option. If that prompt isn't given, just assume that it's keeping everything.

Here's a reasonable enough article about why "X" currency has value. That can be bitcoin or the US Dollar.

TL;DR - Money has no inherent value. Value is given to currency by the people that use it. That's why economies can have things like inflation/deflation. I can't think of any currency fully backed by a physical good like gold anymore. It just became impractical in "mature economies".

I did the upgrade yesterday. Like any OS launch, there are going to be issues. I'd suggest waiting it out a week or more, unless you're really wanting to jump on it ASAP.

As far as programs go, the upgrade process does a simple compatibility check, so there shouldn't be issues there. For gaming DX12 is going to be a huge thing, when games start supporting it.

    1. We don't really know yet, but MS has been pushing last minute updates to current Win10 machines all day. Most likely, I'd say you should be fine gaming. When games start fully supporting it, DX12 will be a big deal too.

    2. Win10 is designed to be run on just about anything. If MS's PR is to be belived, you should be able to run Win10 on anything better than a toaster.

Ok, to start with you need to know which drivers are not installed. On win8.1 press 'WindowsKey + X" to open the advanced context menu. Click "Device Manager" and then post a screenshot of what you see there. Specifically, you're looking for items with yellow exclamation marks next to them.

Nine times out of ten, you're going to find all the drivers you need from the mobo manufacturer website. A quick google search should take you straight to the download page.

You will have to reformat your drive as "GPT". The MBR partition type does not support volumes over 2TB. Give me a sec to find a guide for you.

rustikles got a reaction from Nineshadow in When shold you reinstall windows?
Every 3 months seems extremely unnecessary. It would take me more hours that I'd care to admit to set up my windows environment to a satisfactory level again. The only reason I would consider reinstalling windows is in the case of extreme virus issues or unrecoverable OS corruption.

For a public computer, maybe once per year?
