iSuzak reacted to Notional in AMD's quarterly earnings report - operating loss of 49 million and net loss of 102 million USD
That was why smaller nodes was such good business in the olden days: The very expensive silicon wafers could yield more chips and thus lower the price. Today however, new nodes are so expensive to invent and has such problems with yields (initially), that node shrink is no longer a good way to lower prices. Especially wince silicon is getting so cheap, that you can make a huge wafer plaform for Fiji to interconnect the GPU and HBM.
However, Maxwell being a much simpler architecture, and making highly defective chips into 970 (reason for 3.5GB+0.5GB structure) and selling them for a high price, is making NVidia a lot of money.

However the point of beefier cooling could be a point. But really is you look at Asus, MSI, etc, they pretty much all have the same VRM's and cooling solutions today.

Silicon matters little. Complexity does however, so a bigger more complex chip, might result in lower yields. I am still baffled, why people are buying 970. A fundamentally defective chip, that will have problems with the VRAM in the future.

Can't blame a company for using their competitions derping to their advantage. Their marketing was factually correct and made sense. This is not the place I would criticize AMD.

Again with the propaganda FUD. No, buying NVidia is a lottery with their planned obsolescence. The 770/780 series is obsolete and are crashing in performance compared to AMD's competition architecture/cards. AMD has by far the best support in the graphics industry, by a mile. Intel is a joke and NVidia practices planned obsolescence. Why people are even accepting their extremely expensive 780ti's being gimped to hell is beyond me.

People keeps talking about AMD going bankrupt. I don't think people understand how a publicly traded stock company works.

Finally someone with some economical knowledge. Bear In mind that AMD is still making their CPU's on 28nm, that they only have a midend architecture in the 285 and a new(er) architecture in Fiji/Fury X. The rest are old cards. AMD lost a lot of designs made for 20nm due to TSMC's incompetence (do notice how AMD has scrapped TSMC on their GPU's, going full GloFo/Samsung). There's a reason for that. Scrapping so much work has cost AMD a lot in lost investments, as well as being stuck with obsolete architectures/nodes.

With that in mind, seeing AMD improving their economy to the extent they have, is very impressive. Especially with all the investments in Radeon Group.

In tech companies in big business like AMD, all changes/investments takes a lot of time to implement. We are talking years here. ZEN was started in 2012! AMD is on the right path, and things should improve drastically with Polaris launching, and ZEN at the end of the year. Neither of them has to beat the competitor in everything, they just have to be competitive.
We know ZEN will be competitive enough for AMD to go all AMD on the server/compute market, and be useful in desktop and laptop markets, to be fully competitive with Intel.
We also know Polaris is amazing. Especially with HDR support (we don't even know if Pascal supports that yet. In fact the extreme lack of 16nmFF+ demonstrations along with no info on anything Pascal feature is worrying).

I can, but I as a customer pay for this crap to be implemented in the game. Remember that this replaces what would otherwise be high end settings made by the devs themselves. So I can either have a worse looking game than I paid for, or get shit performance because NVidia wants to lock in all their consumers and thus undermine competition (vendor lock in and unfair business strategies).

iSuzak reacted to Notional in Nvidia Gameworks controversy continues...
What are you talking about? The GAMERS pay for those technologies. The GAMERS pay for the games, with this in it, and you are ok with NVidia locking out a huge part of that game, and the graphical fidelity of the game, that gamers have paid for, just because they chose a different hardware configuration, than you?

PC gaming is moving dangerously close to console market strategies, and people are imploring this to continue? I don't understand why people would ever be fanboys, and support such a strategy from a company. If EA did something like this, there would be digging memes, pitchforks and smear campaigns. But when NVidia does it, it's the best thing ever. Why? Why support this?

And how exactly did that affect your gaming experience? Did the graphics worsen? Did the performance? Those are rhetorical questions, because we both know Mantle had no negative impact on NVidia users what so ever.
There is a difference between a graphics pipeline API and graphical effects middleware.

Either way, mantle is now a huge part of OpenGL next/Vulkan, so NVidia users will also get to enjoy the benefits of it.

To be honest I don't know how anyone can be super excited or hopeful for PC optimization on any Nvidia Games Works title atm.

Daylight ran like garbage, Lords of the Fallen has performance problems, Watch Dogs ran like garbage. AC Unity recommended specs are the funniest thing I have ever seen.

The funny thing? Batman ran on PC at Sony's E3 press conference to "demo" PS4. Games Works supposedly exists to "optimize" games but every game is an unoptimized piece of crap. Meanwhile "AMD" games are optimized as hell in comparison. I think Nvidia is just trying to sell multiple GPU setups at this point and I don't have high hopes for anything Games Works.

Eventually people will draw the correlation that all of these unoptimized pieces of crap are all Nvidia Games Works games....

Meanwhile Alien Isolation runs great, Sniper Elite 3 runs great (A 970 or a r9 290 can do 4k at damn near 60 FPS). Frostbite engine is involved with AMD and runs great on everything and looks way better on PC.  If Nvidia Games Works wants to make the claim they are giving us awesome stuff in games? How about they get the publishers to give us higher texture packs, because that is about all that matters.

TXAA is garbage. It is a cheap, blurry, crappy AA to be used when a port is absolute crap and has inflated requirements on GPU ( by about 3x in the case of Ubisoft) so that it can't run better AA. Any port from "next gen" should literally run at the same FPS or higher at 4k on a GTX 970/R9 290 with higher graphics settings. If it isn't? The port was horrible/sabotaged and all those "bad ports" seem to be Games Works...

Also the 4k claim is not really a "claim". The consoles run AMD 7000 series GCN architecture. These titles if anything should run slightly BETTER on AMD, yet they run horrible on everything due to Games Works, and then get crippled on AMD. Games Works simply needs to go. Horrible for the PC Gaming industry and doing more harm than good.  A few FPS swing in Nvidia's favor, I could care less about. The game being an impossibly unoptimized piece of crap? Should have even Nvidia fanboys complaining about Games Works. It's claimed reason to exist is a total sham.

    This.
    $1.29 (how it's written in the US. Don't argue) /that's a joke
That's too much for a single song. $6-8 for movie tickets, to a movie I don't get a copy of, is absurd (not to mention the food prices). $20-$40 for a single Blu-ray disc is crazy.
$X a month (whatever it is) for a service to watch any show/movie I want to streamed to my house, when that service is being throttled by my ISP, when I don't want to watch 90% of what's on it, and the other 10% is old and irrelevant is too damn much.
I mean really. When they say it's a distribution (the combination of availability and pricing) problem, they aren't kidding. I don't want to pay $30 a month for Dish to give me 900 channels I don't want and make me pay more for channels I do want.
I know. I know. The South Park cable company episode fits soooo perfectly here.
Let it be known, if I ever go to jail for pirating, it was justified. Words of the authorities be damned, it was justified.
