If you're not planning on overclocking you can drop to a 600 or 550, I would strongly go against buying refurbished PSU's since they can take the entire system down with them.

tbh you should probably bump the wattage up to overkill like 750w+ because most consumers who know goose eggs about PSUs will be attracted to higher numbers

To second @Sprawlie 's reply, the problem with "updates" isn't that software developers are intentionally slowing down computers.

The majority of the problem comes from something called "layers of abstraction". When a new generation of hardware becomes widespread and is more powerful than the previous generation, software developers will target that generation. As a result of the new power, they will be able to meet their performance benchmarks with less optimization, and less development effort. Therefore, as technology becomes more and more powerful, the software that runs on it tends to get more and more bloated, and less and less efficient.

When running generations old hardware, this bloat is very noticeable.

Now, in the short term, as in "I built this computer less than a year ago and it's already running slowly", that's not because software developers are nerfing it. Rather, it's probably because the system administrator, i.e. you, forgot to turn off features like "start with windows" and "auto update", and so the more applications you install, the more background processes get started up when you boot your machine, thus slowing it down severely.

Software manufacturers, do not for the most part (though with some exceptions) intentionaly slow down older hardware.
 
What they do, is improve functionality. They add new things. Those new things take up resources. as software gets more complex and does more things (including OSs), those resources are limited and get used up.
 
going to use a couple fictional examples
 
OS v1.0 requires 100 cpu cycles a second and 2gb o ram to run. had 6 features.
OS v2.0 adds 15 new features, but those new features take 300 cpu cycles to run and 4 gb of RAM
 
your computer only has a total of 350 cpu cycles a second and 4gb of ram.
 
did OS v2 intentionaly slow down the machine? No. But adding the features just used more of the limited number of resources. this is the fight that we've all had since day 1 of computers.
 
this was also the biggest problem with Vista for example. When it came out, ti's basic functions just required more resources than the average computer sold with at the time. so it ran like garbage.

Perhaps Apple should throw a couple of billion dollars towards AMD to aid development like they did with display panels. Just saying...

Windows should just be free to be honest, MS makes money with corporate customers and consumers are simply doing them a huge favour by enforcing their monopoly. Plus, they treat their customers like beta testers. In exchange, the least they could do is let you install their system for free.
 
I don't really see them extending support, beyond a certain point they should just be allowed to give the middle finger to people refusing to upgrade - this obsession with sticking to an os for over 10 years is part of the reason windows is so bad to begin with, MS can't take any step forwards when half of their user base will have compatibility problems. If you absolutely refuse to use windows 10, there are plenty of modern and supported linux distributions out there to choose from.

It was the best in all categories in 2010, yes. Not anymore, though. It hasn't received any new features since around 2012 and it doesn't support all of the latest APIs and advancements made over the last few years. It's also going out of support in 14 months, after which it becomes a security hole and app support will go down rapidly.

It doesn't have Windows Vista and earlier ISOs, and doesn't have some Enterprise ISOs, and also doesn't appear to have Windows 7 Ultimate for non-OEM.

I wouldn't hold my breath, Nvidia has priced the 20 series way to high for there to be enough demand for the new cards for that to occur, if anything, it appears to me that Nvidia plans to sell their overstock of the 10 series right along side the 20 series, and then maybe drop the price of the 20 series once the 10 series sells out. Of course this is all speculation, I could be very wrong.

I guess I'm a bit spoiled with the PSA1. The cheaper alternatives definitely do work though you do need to be more careful when adjusting them.

I have been considering hackentoshing it (pls no ban) but have decided against it for the simple reason that I have a 2015 macbook air like right over there so I don;t need more macos in my life ;p

Honestly, even with the price of the eGPU, you're probably better off just replacing the laptop with something better.
