Jito463 reacted to Middcore in Tesla locked a customer's car out of 1/3 of its battery capacity for a $4.5k ransom
Well the key difference is that the car really did have "V8" capability when it was sold to the new owner.

For your analogy to work, the chain of events would have to be something like:
Owner 1 buys V6 Mustang It needs an engine replacement under warranty and Ford puts in a V8 instead by mistake(?) Owner 1 sells his Mustang to Owner 2 truthfully saying it has a V8 Owner 2 takes the car in for an oil change, Ford realizes the mistake they made before, puts a V6 back in without telling Owner 2 Of course that's completely absurd but it's the type of scenario that becomes possible in a world where features that exist in the "hardware" can be artificially locked down like this.

I wonder what conversation, if any, Tesla and the first owner had about this when they originally swapped the battery?

A better solution would be just to reintroduce shooting classes in school, to teach students proper gun handling and safety.  That's a program I could get behind.

I get it, and I'm all for people learning better how to control their firearms (the only gun control I do support), but I will never support government mandates to do so.  For my reasoning, just look at drivers licenses.  A lot of people make the complaint that you have to be licensed to drive, so you should have to be licensed to own a firearm.  Putting aside the Constitutional argument against that, it doesn't even make any practical sense.

Despite all of the regulations and restrictions we have on driving, there are still around 30,000 vehicle deaths every year (and that's on top of the accidents that do not result in injury or death), and countless lousy drivers on the road.  That's about the same as all the firearm deaths each year, and those numbers include people who commit suicide with a gun.

Not trying to get political, just showing why the idea of the government requiring people to have training will never work like you think it will.

LOL, they practically invented the label maker and have been around near 65 years.

I use a dymo label printer at work and it works really well.  I will for sure not be upgrading to another dymo product with this label lockout. .  There's a lot of other options on the market now so it's near financial suicide for the dymo line.

You're comparing physical standards (USB C) and digital standards (USB 3). The digital standards are indeed backwards compatible - you can make any USB 3 device talk to any USB 2 device etc. - but the physical standards are not. You can't just blindly swap out the connector on a PCB as the different USB connectors require different circuitry to support them. Both parts of the specification operate completely separately.

The problem is you are just focusing on Apple, as if the talks regarding innovation and such are referring to Apple.  I think MrMoose is referring to other companies and not Apple.

There are devices out there that will be hindered by it.  Overall, I think better legislation could cover the current issues without the concept of limiting future potential.

No, I did  not miss the point, in fact I am fairly sure you are.
This being enabled for consumer CPUs means that any second hand CPU on the second hand market becomes suspect as you can no longer rely on it working even though it is the correct CPU for your motherboard. It is a bad development for consumers in general.  Not to mention that if this feature is being enabled in the way as is shown in the screenshot it will likely be enabled by many people not fully realizing what it does, locking them out of future repairs in case they ever need to replace a motherboard later in the life cycle (where lenovo no longer supports it officially) and other shenanigans.

This feature being actively enabled in consumer products is simply not healthy in a market that is already plagued by chip shortages and where increasingly focus is put on reducing e-waste.

Also, to be clear, it isn't bad that Lenovo specifically does this, it is bad that this is done at all. So you really don't need to defend Lenovo's honor here as far as I am concerned, as I would have posted the same article if it had been any other pc vendor.

    Edit:
Also, it appears that in some cases Lenovo is currently selling systems with already locked CPUs. Which is just outright bad news for consumers.

I never claimed it would be a good last resort gun, just that it could potentially be used as such.  If the FTF issue were resolved, it would be a pretty potent little firearm if you're grappling with a bad guy.  Sort of '.38 special' style weapon (though that would likely be a much better choice than this gun).

Though, speaking of last resort guns, this could potentially be another choice:
It might not penetrate that well, but hit someone in the face with it and they'd definitely feel it.

Nonsense. That's like saying something written in a foreign language somewhere and translating it back to English would be considered unauthorized access because it wasn't intended to be read by anyone capable of speaking English. What you're basically advocating for is this:

It has nothing to do with older people.  this idea that being old means you know less about technology is a stupid myth that needs to die.    There are 100's of thousands of ignorant young karens and karson's all over the internet who don't know the difference between facebook and an ISP.

Not everything has to be super quick, and my 8TB HDD was well below half that price (close to 1/3rd).  I also bought it a couple years ago when an 8TB SSD would have cost me the price of a used vehicle.  Why should I spend more for something that doesn't need to be fast?  Different people have different use cases.

If the leak is correct, then you could run 2 x 64c ThreadRippers for a 128c / 256t system.  And with an 8 channel (presumably 16 slot) memory configuration, assuming 256GB / slot, that's a max of 4TB of RAM.  That is absolutely insane.....and I want one.  I have no need for one, I have no use for one, I want it just because.
