Lower latency translates to higher performance. CAS stands for column access strobe, which relates to a very specific multiplier for data access speeds (there's also RAS and some other fun acronyms I've forgotten at the moment.)

I've used plenty of keys for both windows and office from certain sites that sell just the keys for $10-30, haven't had any issues yet.  The biggest difference is that it's an oem key, so when you activate windows with it, it's "burned". It creates a unique "hash type code" specific to your hardware, so if you reinstall windows, it'll already be activated, but you won't ever be able to use it on another pc.

Dude, you wont even OC, save the bucks. Get a great build in the future custom looping is EXPENSIVE not to mention delicate.

Just done some stress testing on the combo. Turned out I had to drop to 4.7 to allow Prime95 29.3 Blend to keep running, so far passing 20 minutes. I also took the chance to get some photos of the mobo.
 

This is is the area next to the VRM heatsink. It is hitting just over 60C.
 
 
Here's two views of the regulator area at the top, near the EPS power connector. This doesn't have a heatsink. I got a highest reading of just over 70C.
 
Under this condition, the total system was taking around 170W for large FFT, 190W for small FFT. Peak reported CPU temperature was 74C with ambient of 22.5C. The core voltage was around 1.40v for small FFT, 1.425v for large FFT. Now passed 30 minutes of Prime95... I type too slowly...

In my honest opinion, you are kind of wasting money by upgrading your GPU now. The 980 is on par with the 1060. And if you are happy with your current build, just wait until new generations come out so that you can buy better performance per dollar.

I agree on price to performance AMD wins, and I'm not interested in this launch really, but it's not boring and it's not useless 

Wanted to jump on the Coffee Lake bandwagon, but 8700k's were nowhere to be seen apart from one place looking to rape your wallet. 8600k wasn't that much better, so in the end I got the 8350k to play with. At 4c4t I thought it might make cooling easier for some heavy overclocking fun.
 
I got the Asrock Z370 Pro4 as the cheapest non-MSI mobo. Cooling I went all out, and got the Noctua D15 (I find AIOs more pain to use when tinkering). Ram is Corsair, I think it is part of their Vengeance series rated on the box at 2800 but the XMP include a 3000 profile which I'm using.
 

 
Ok, not the best photo or setup, but it is enough to run. Oh, in case anyone is curious, the GPU is only there to get things going (in case the built in GPU affects CPU bench results). It's an R7 260X and the original cooler died so I replaced it with a Wraith that came with my R5 1600.
 
Don't like the bios but I am more used to Asus. voltage adjustments can be made either fixed or offset, but it doesn't give much of a clue where I'm starting from. At least I've not found a software tool that can read it in Windows, other than the VID.
 
I started using hwbot last weekend, and it seems no one else has started populating results for this CPU yet. Just to get a CPU-Z clock logged, I managed to get a submission at just over 5.1 GHz, but it was only just stable enough to do that and nothing else.
 
Backing down to 5.0 GHz, I thought I'd try and stabilise it for some other benches. It took +275mV offset to get it to pass Cinebench 15, eventually scoring a best of 848. I also threw in a R11.5 run before I called it a night. These benchmarks will not be its strength area due to lack of HT.
 
Reported VID during that exceeded 1.5V! Temps were ok still, reaching a logged peak of 78C.
 
I'm more interested in some other single thread benchmarks later... at some point I also will try a delid to see what that does to temps.
 

that's not actually that inconceivable. For many mainstream users , the pentium brand still resonates as high end .

But if game genres were IPs, then Epic could probably sue PUBG devs for making their game based on the Last Man Standing game mode, which was in Epic's Unreal Tournament almost 2 decades ago.

Yah know, I have to say, I've been watching people play PUBG a lot, but the one thing that stops me from buying PUBG is the creators are absolute...dick rags.

While it's an obvious grab at the fanbase, and a blatantly uninventive game....that's how gaming works. In fact, by the headline, I expected it to be one of those app store games that are literally a legally questionable blatant rips...like candy crush....which ripped candy swipe...a bejeweled rip...then sued the person they ripped, which was settled.
It doesn't even look like it plays similar , just rips the game mode blatantly. 
 
I mean if this were legally doable, we all know Nintendo would have sued Sony for PlayStation All Stars if they could have, even though it had 0 chance of being a successful game on account of the fact it was shit. 
 I mean it's so obvious that there's nothing they can do about this one screenshot of the game should have been enough for Chang Han Kim  to be like "I should keep my fucking mouth shut, because all I'll do is give our game and team further bad PR and give this game more attention"

$480 for 7700k, will be $480 for 8700k assuming no MSRP change
$380 for ryzen 1700, only slightly less IPC and 2 more cores. 

Another point is, is it really worthwhile to do a full system upgrade to this platform when cannonlake will probably require yet another new motherboard.

Not surprised. I have seen a number of post on reddit anput some z3 phones with water damage inside. Its hard for me to still vouche for sony but they are the only ones making compact high end phones...

I guess I'll order my fucking TR motherboard and CPU some time soon.
