Dash Lambda got a reaction from Kilrah in Small 3D LiDAR Modules
I don't think I would be able to use Apple's module --I don't know what protocol it uses to communicate, and it's most certainly not well documented. Given the difficulty I've had finding any information at all on it I don't think I have the skillset to figure out how to integrate it into a different device.

Dash Lambda got a reaction from Lightwreather in Not-so Epic anymore, eh? - Epic won’t update Fortnite to run on the Steam Deck (well, Linux in general too)
As someone who has worked professionally on Linux compatibility for Unreal-based projects: It's not easy and it's very much not fun.
Epic could probably make it a lot easier if they wanted to. They don't really want to. They told me.
Hopefully the Steam Deck gives them a good reason.

Dash Lambda got a reaction from jagdtigger in Yikes! Lenovo is vendor-locking AMD Ryzen CPUs via PSB
As far as I know, the first rule of cybersecurity is if the attacker has hardware access all bets are off. This seems like an... exceptionally silly security measure to me, the situations in which locking down compatibility between specific CPUs and mobos would help can't possibly be relevant on mass-market consumer machines, right?

Oh, I would love a more comprehensive status readout on its own monitor, but I run out of realestate too much as it is with four XP

Dash Lambda reacted to dkoudijs in What is the most “jerry-rigged” solution to a problem you have had with a PC?
Quick story I got at a trade show
TLDR - PC used as a hard reset of a server
Many years ago I worked at a bank that was going through a ownership transfer. The current mangement froze all spending. Everything was forzen, we couldn't even buy pens if we ran out.
So this freeze was going to last another 3 weeks and we had a server that needed to be fixed. However it was way out of warrenty, the guy who wrote the code was long gone due to the merger so none of us left in IT knew how to permently fix it. However if someone manually rebooted the server it worked again for a few days.
This was the server that ran the batches, so would need to be online as much as possible.
The server would stop responding to network requests after it completed a batch, and would need to be manually rebooted.
The IT manager asked if I had a solution, I shurgged and said I could jerry rig something. Man I was not proud of this solution, but here it is
The solution
- Rig up a small desktop PC to ping the server
- Server stopped reponding, eject the cd rom
- CD Rom had a pencil taped on the end that would press the server power button
- Change bios to auto come back on if power detected, and power button was pressed
This solution was in place until the merger, then the whole team was let go. I wonder if the PC is still sitting there ejecting its cd rom

I pretty much never see my bare desktop. Didn't even realize it was so cluttered.

I mean, maybe some users. To me it just looks like an alternative, not really better or worse, just catering to different people.

I'm... not sure how you would build one. But you can sure as hell simulate one and render a 3D immersion.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but Rubik's Hypercubes do exist. Not physically of course, but there's a program, I think it's called Magic Cube 4D.

Dash Lambda got a reaction from WhitetailAni in Windows 10 consumer editions to reach End of Life in 2025
Makes more sense put that way I think. Basically just another Windows 10 update.
It'd be weird to see it called Windows 11 though.

My guess is that Windows 10 "21H2" will not be Windows 10 at all, but a "new OS" that's still Windows 10 but something else instead.

And loads that aren't. It's possible life can exist beyond what we know. Wasn't too long ago we thought life couldn't exist on the seafloor in Antarctica, or the Marianas Trench.
What's your fact that proves life isn't out there?
Right. You don't have any.

Same can be said for assuming there's no life.

Dash Lambda got a reaction from TempestCatto in Is Scalping Profitable? Edit: Im not gonna scalp anymore.
I feel like the "to each their own" sentiment has limits that this definitely brushes up with.
There's a difference between "can I make money by doing my own thing" and "can I make money by making life harder for other people." That's all scalping is, you're not doing anything of value, you're just draining people.
So, ultimately, I don't think scalping as an activity should be given that sort of respect.
