You're asking the wrong question. The answer to "Is <insert activity> profitable?" is "Depends on your skills."

 

Now here's the real answer: if you have the skills to be a profitable scalper, you would also have the skills to be profitable at something else that would generate a far higher ROI. So the correct question to ask is: "What is it that I have the skills to do that would maximize my profits?"

The obvious answer will be "if it wasn't profitable, people wouldn't do it".

Of course I can definitely not recommend anyone do it, but you do you.

There's a difference between "can I make money by doing my own thing" and "can I make money by making life harder for other people." That's all scalping is, you're not doing anything of value, you're just draining people.

 

So, ultimately, I don't think scalping as an activity should be given that sort of respect.

Oh yeah, scalping is horrible (in any form, whether it's GPU's, consoles or 'actual scalping' like medicine and water during tough times).

I was gonna add my whole "well morally it's questionable"-thing, but I figured if someone has the thought of doing scalping in their mind, there is not much value in trying to convince them otherwise.

That was kind of what my "you do you" was targeted at.

It was not approval of any kind, it was rather disproval wrapped in a layer of "Ultimately it's your decision".

You would have to either have a big margin when scalping or buy and sell lots with a low margin. Lower margin is a quicker sale. 
 

If you don’t have a big investment, I wouldn’t start scalping.

 

Honestly I don’t have a problem with scalpers. Ultimately, it’s down to product availability rather than masses of scalpers, regarding GPU costs etc. Scalpers are a symptom, not the cause.

If you don’t have a big investment, I wouldn’t start scalping.

 

Honestly I don’t have a problem with scalpers. Ultimately, it’s down to product availability rather than masses of scalpers, regarding GPU costs etc. Scalpers are a symptom, not the cause.

I doubt you'll make anything close to that as you need the inventory to supply it and you are fighting against people with much greater resources than you and a GLOBAL shortage. The reason we made so much was we were selling pictures of the GPUs so we had an infinite supply. eBay has cracked down on this now so you'll need to find a new method. Also I don't morally agree with stealing or deceiving people so to prevent people from actually loosing money on the sales you need to do some tricks on eBay and PayPal. I would go even further with the concert ticket example and say that you shouldn't purposefully buy concert tickets you can't use for the purpose of selling them at a higher price than you bought them.

 

It's obviously different if you buy them intending to use them, and then suddenly are unable to due to Life Happens.

That's not something to be proud of.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Just because there are no laws against it, doesn't mean that you should do it.

 

That being said, I don't think that it should be made illegal or something. Regulating a free market doesn't play well with me. There are also tons of situations in history where scalpers have also gotten screwed over because prices stabilized while they had a bunch of inventory. 

 

(Maybe this will happen and all these scalpers will have to liquidate their stock at reduced prices. I can hope, though)
