LtStaffel got a reaction from zogthegreat in spi_master: No such file or directory
Either the file exists and you do not have permissions to write to it, or one of the directories in that tree does not exist. I'm guessing it is the latter case and that you copy and pasted that line, which was correct at some point but now one of the numbers in the directory names changed or something like that. Start at /sys/ and go down through the directory chain until you find the one that does not exist, and then try to figure out which one DOES exist now that you can use instead. Hope that made sense

LtStaffel got a reaction from Chionele in VPN Machine
This will not be much of a VPN in the conventional sense because it will not change your apparent IP to servers you connect to, nor will it encrypt any traffic that will be going outside your local network.

OPNSense is a fork of PFSense but mostly re-written.  In my experience it's more stable and has a lot of useful features installed by Default, such as an IPS, which wasn't installed in PFSense when I last used it.

Most Importantly though, PfSense is only available for free for non-commercial use and is owned by Netgate.   OPNSense is using a BSD License and can be used for commercial purposes for free, you just have to buy any premium support.

Cloudflare is really good.  You may still want to get a bastion host with a cloud provider like AWS or Azure as well.  Your team could use it as a jumphost maybe.

I wouldn't rely solely on one solution.

@Lurick is correct in that if your line is saturated, then the only way to still serve stuff is to have someone with a line big enough to eat the data. You should be able to get cloudflare DDoS protection without hosting all of your stuff on their servers. What would happen is that all traffic going to you would first go through them, and if a ddos happens then cloudflare eats the data and only passes on what you want from there.

you can't run esxi in a container, you need a different hypervisor. Since you already have Debian, Redhat's KVM (virt-manager package) is exactly what you need and will do a great job. It installs on top of Linux and can run many VMs with minimal overhead.

Datacenters use a lot of ssds too, there much faster.

Data centers use hdds cause there cheaper, not more reliable.

Also this is for a desktop not a server, so way different workload.

ALso google had a stuff to look at ssd vs hdd reliable in the datacenter, ssds were more reliable. https://www.zdnet.com/article/ssd-reliability-in-the-real-world-googles-experience/

You might want to try and learn some basic Linux and stuff about running servers first before attempting this. If you are new to Linux, then learning it, Plex, networking, and the nuances of self-hosting services will be quite difficult. Maybe see if you have a friend who knows about this stuff and can help you either in person or on a phone call for extended periods of time (you will encounter issues no matter how good you are).

I would look up the latest hackintosh methods. If it's a full VM it should work exactly like a real computer and the process won't be any different than doing it on a real computer.

What is up my fellow modders!
Let me introduce you to our next project Node Zero!
    BACKGROUND
Node Zero was conceptualized as our move back home on the west coast meant leaving our staircase server hub back in Tennessee.  Now that I’ve been back home in NV for the past year, I have been missing not only our PLEX and Gaming servers, but our backups and our RAID 5 system.
Because of this, I started brainstorming a new case to house our server hardware, something that could handle many HDDs.  After searching around, I just didn’t like what I saw and didn’t want to go slim server rack(and of course money issues prevents a couple grand for a server)
So we are replacing this case with a Nanoxia Rexgear Hydra 2 Mining case, and modding it to accept up to 12 HDDs and an SSD or two.
    OLD SERVER CASE

    HYDRA 2 CONCEPT

Here in this YouTube video we unbox the Arctic cooling gear and the Nanoxia HDD bays.  Also has hardware going into our Honda Prelude PC mod.

Have a wonderful day and I hope you are excited as I am to see this build come together!!!

wait, i think i missed something about the 1PB video, did linus bring up the ZFS ram thing in there?

also, i kinda wanna say "it would be interesting to do testing on how much ram is *actually* advisable"
(and by that i dont specificly mean linus or anyone else, just in general, "it'd be nice if someone did some testing")

What makes it even worse is I see those large memory requirements being advised even when deduplication is not going to be used. So please spread the word when necessary .

P.S. I know ram is cheap so 16GB is a fine starting point, just please never use the 1GB-5GB of ram per TB advice ever again.

Bootkit is this service amd offers you for free, they basically send you an athlon am4 processor, which is just good enough to update bios. But it isnt needed any more, as all bios are updated.

That is the reason i recommend the new msi b450 series motherboards. They have a feature that you can update the bios with no cpu, no ram whatso ever. Just plug a usb stick in the dedicated usb port and click a physical button on the motherboard and you are done. Real useful stuff.

LtStaffel got a reaction from Dissitesuxba11s in Linux VS Windows; Does OS matter for F@H?
From my cursory inspection of those two posts they all tend to agree that Nvidia cards perform marginally better on Linux, though the exact reason for this is not always tied to PCIe differences. Most people on those threads think it has to do with drivers.

Would not use built in firewall, DMZ is good though.
Just get any old computer of any processing power (I'm serious, Celerons with 1 gig of RAM are more than enough for your use case) and two ethernet ports. Slap pfSense on it and roll.
