Why does being angry about a $300+ price hike mean you're poor or shouldn't be in this hobby? Anyone would get their feathers ruffled by it, no matter the hobby. That's a big jump. Imagine the outrage if nvidia priced their top end i5 at $500+ next gen. No one would stand for it, but for some reason when it comes to gpus and nvidia in particular we're just told that we're the ones at fault for being angry. That we should just accept it because that's how things are.

Edit: I realize the joke of 'top end i5' but I meant the i5 k sku that everyone recommends each gen.

People actually paying these ridiculous prices are to blame. Gamers have proven time and time again that they suck at voting with their wallets. Inb4 the resident Nvidia fanboy (not you) hits me with "hurr durr, it's not our fault you're poor" even though AMD's prices always follow Nvidia's

You see guys. This other company is doing the same horrible things as apple. That makes it less bad right? Oh wait that's not how that works. One does not excuse the other. I do understand fight the evaluation of a property if you think it's too high but 200 dollars is just stupid. Either come up with a reasonable number or get out.

A more proper analogy keeping with the car theme would be this:

Every company that makes engines has a problem with their engines and they fix them, but the fix causes a bit of a problem. Your engine still has the same horsepower as before, but when turning left you can't go over 160mph. Not only do you or any average person not notice it, you aren't even affected by it. The only ones affected by it are Nascar drivers and, indirectly, people that watch Nascar.

I didn't see this anywhere so time to start the rumor mill spinning. Take with lots of salt.

It seems that not only has Intel been having problems with their 10nm process, but they've been unable to fix them and have resorted to making it less dense than previously. This results in a process that is closer to 12nm than 10nm, and a q4 2019 launch date in a best case scenario.

My thoughts: Intel really seems to be taking a beating lately and if true this is just making it worse. This would put their process essentially on par with other 10nm processes rather than ahead like they've been for so long, and not only that but they'd be releasing it about a year behind. If they wanted AMD to come back from the brink and claw back market share, they're doing perfect.

But really, I'll be happy when these are out regardless. My 1080 is starting to show its age and can't even properly push 1440p max settings at 144hz anymore. Maybe I am in need of a full system upgrade. Hm...

We're still on that new technology frontier where only the most high end stuff will do, part in parcel with this sort of thing. I don't know why there is this new trend to jump to bad optimization for highly demanding workloads, sometimes things just really are hard and the minimum viable product just is demanding like that, VR is that. Ray tracing is another example.

Daegun reacted to Morgan MLGman in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice VR Edition is launching next week but your PC probably can't run it
To be fair, you need a GTX 1080 to run this game at a constant 60FPS+ at 1440p at High/Ultra settings, so considering that VR has a fairly similar resolution, it looks pretty reasonable that the 1080 is what's recommended. Also, remember that "recommended" doesn't mean "minimum", it only means that they recommend a GTX 1080 for an optimal gaming experience.

I'm sure they could reduce the quality and visual fidelity but should they do that only to make a 1060 "enough" for it? I don't think so :3

    @SC2Mitch
AMD also paid off 155 mil in long term debt, however it looks like they increased short term debt by 153 mil. AMD for a number of years has been working to pay off as much long term debt as possible, I looked at it a while ago and is a big reason they have been posting low profits or losses as a lot of funds have been used for that.

To people talking about Intel TDP ratings - Apple isn't making laptops since yesterday and they aren't using Intel CPUs since yesterday too. They've been doing that for years.

They can't look at the TDP and say "hey, let's make a cooler for just that specific TDP number and slap it onto the CPU, that will suffice and we don't need any testing".
They obviously tested the CPU in many different ways and they could measure how much heat it puts out at different clock speeds, after all they had to create a motherboard for it (mainly the power-delivery section) so they HAD to know what this CPU is capable of. Designing an inferior cooling solution is solely on them and has nothing to do with skewed TDP ratings from Intel, as much as I dislike them for their business practices.

Seeing an issue like that in a laptop costing that much is concerning, to say the least.

I received a news article notification for this on my phone earlier this morning. Only read a little bit of it, but it was extremely pro-Price in the way it was written. It went on about how this poor woman was attacked by users of 4chan who were continuing a vendetta since 'gamergate' and were just adding another notch to their belt of women they removed from the industry. It stated that they relentlessly attacked this woman on social media and that a 'hateful mob' lodged complaints with her boss to get her fired. It didn't include any of the comments made by Price or the person she was responding to.

When I saw this thread here I wasn't going to look at it because it seemed like a whole big shit show that I don't even want to waste my time with. And, it is, but for different reasons. I'm glad I did read this thread though because I got to see the actual initial twitter conversation that took place that sparked the sacking. And boy does it paint a different picture than what that earlier article I saw portrayed.

She was representing her company through her twitter account, and as such should be held to company standards when it comes to communicating to the public. Looking at the twitter comments by the user 'Deroir' they appear to be genuine comments of someone who has a shared interest who was interested in opening a dialogue. 'Deroirs' twitter profile lists them as a Guild Wars 2 streamer, so it's reasonable to assume that they have a genuine interest in the game and its development process.

Price obviously has some underlying issues that she took out on this person for the simple fact that they were [presumably] male. I believe if it was a female that wrote those comments to her twitter, she would be praising a fellow female for being so interested and knowledgeable in the industry.

The company made the right decision in taking action against her in this situation. She was engaging directly with customers of the company and members of the community centralised around the product they provide. She engaged with them in an inappropriate manner that could cause damage to the company and their branding.
While I sympathise with anyone losing their job and their means of supporting themselves and perhaps their family, we don't know what went on behind the scenes at the company. It's entirely possible that she was offered an opportunity to receive disciplinary action not involving termination for the incident on condition that she issued an apology, but maybe she refused. Maybe there were other incidents or other workplace issues with her, such as where she publicly celebrated the death of TotalBiscuit [also on twitter]. We really don't know what went on behind the scenes, so it's hard to say whether or not termination was the companies first choice of action or if it was the only choice they were left with.

I haven't seen the twitter comments made by the other employee that was also fired, so I can't say whether or not it was justified for that person also receiving disciplinary action, but again we don't know what was happening internally or during counselling that resulted in the termination. Again, it's unfortunate that people have lost their job over his incident, but when you are representing your company you need to behave accordingly and not act in a way that could damage the company or the public perception of the company.

Alright, here's how I - as a person who has never played an ArenaNet game before - see this since I find it so fascinating.

Writer (Ms. Price) posts a statement about how difficult it is to create compelling characters in MMOs. Streamer - probably unbeknownst to her or she wouldn't have responded the way she did, official ArenaNet partner - provides constructive criticism/rebuttal. Writer then brings up gender inequality - not at all brought up by streamer - as a shield to downplay streamer as a "rando asshat" and to complain about what was constructive criticism.

ArenaNet president Mr. O'Brien nailed this one perfectly in his response. Ms. Price really expects sympathy for being fired when she essentially dehumanized and attacked a gamer?
