NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1180 PCB: more power, new SLI finger

Since there's a rumor going with Nvidia releasing their new GTX1180 at Gamescom, now, there've been a new leak of the GTX1180 PCB from Chiphell (spotted by Tweaktown)TweakTown Enlarged Image

This is the front of the new GTX 1180 PCB where we can see an interesting new SLI finger that is much bigger, some tighter VRAM placements which should be a new home for GDDR6. We also have a 6+8-pin PCIe power connector setup, which is an additional 6-pin PCIe power connector on top of the single 8-pin PCIe power connector that was required on the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition.

The new SLI finger should be a key interest here, especially since Asus and Acer are pushing their 4K 144Hz G-sync panels and 65" 120 big display. Does it mean we gonna see much better SLI scaling from now on, or even a single 1180 will be able to push 60+ FPS at 4K no problemo? 

Food for thoughts. Actually, the new GPU could be named 2080 since Nvidia is celebrating at Gamescom on 20/8. Hmmm... *tin foil hat*

Nope. AFAIK this is on the developers, not nvidia. Also the light surrounding the components on the sli finger seems... fake.

 

I only see 8 slots for memory chips... suggesting the earlier one we saw with 12 memory chips was an  1080+ 1180+ or possibly a ti version?

a 6pin and an 8pin? Could be the 1180ti or 1180+, but not the 1180 which should come first.

The wide sli finger could be nv link, but that's for their quadros, unless nvidia decided to use it all future cards. The standard sli finger in right next to it.

I'm actually surprised they don't ditch SLI entirely to push developers to use DX12 instead which should make far more efficient use of the resources.

This new "SLI" connector is reversed, compared to the Quadro board above. Looks like it will be a consumer version of NV Link, hopefully still capable of virtualizing all bridged GPUs into one, minus the driver overhead and video memory duplication.

That looks like NV link not SLI

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

The SLI finger seems kinda unnecessary with how terrible SLI scales,unless this reversed NVLink thing would convince devs to optimize for multiple GPUs again.

2 way SLI scales pretty well actually (~80%), that's why they are limiting it. Where did this SLI is dead meme come from? 3 way and 4 way sure, but 2 way is super definitely still optimized for, in most AAA games

My first thought is that this is simply a developer tool used to trouble shoot an engineering card for production.

Did some googling and the entire connector, small and wide is nvlink. I remember seeing somewhere nvlink, didn't have the sli connector, or i might have never noticed the sli connector in the first place. Maybe the card can do both sli or nvlink.

Not sure about SLI but crossfire sure as hell doesn't work in FF15. Force it on and you get treated with rendering errors like repeated sky boxes etc. Annoying trend with GameWorks games for me, not that long ago basically every game worked well or worked at all with crossfire but not anymore.

Well that's a separate issue from SLI being "dead". Until AMD is more competitive in the gpu market they are going to be treated as second class when it comes to development hours, and yea ofc Gameworks is super not helping

SLI for FF15 isn't really supported either from what I can tell, required a bit of hacking and has similar issues. Just seems to me GameWorks games just don't support multi GPU, basically in line with Nvidia saying that it's not worth it a while back.

That's just outright false, plenty of GameWorks games support SLI and Nvidia never said that SLI as a whole wasn't worth it they said SLI over 2 way wasn't worth it. it could be FF15's choice of engine or multiple other factors that lead to it not supporting multi-gpu well
