It's about how it already failed because it had plans that were way beyond the initial release date that got pushed by a few months and will probably be pushed again, assuming kickstarter backers don't start asking for refunds

Well..

Long ago, this company made a kickstarter for a game.

A game that would be infamous for gaining over 2 mil in crowdfunding.

Later receiving around 90 mil in funds.

The owner of said company started by buying a super nice house with his 90 mil, then started on development.

The game is supposed to be an open world space adventure in which you play online, flying from planets to space stations doing cool stuff.

The game was supposed to come out November 2014.

They have about $9 mil left.

The game is screwed.

Also, recently there was an article on The Escapist about employees complaining about their job, how the game isn't coming out soon, how they're running out of money, ect. The developers are threatening to sue The Escapist for their story, which will open a case in which The Escapist can prove every bad thing against the developer.

They are shooting themselves in the foot.

I used to be quite active here.

So far they've spent at least $82m, so at this point you can pretty much say they're out of money

wow, ok.

I'd suggest reading some pinned threads in this subforum to get known with the game. I won't mingle with the people above who are saying stuff about the state of the game, you'll have to see that for yourself.

If you like what's there, consider getting in on it :)

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

Really, is it going to be one of those games? like it gets delayed all the time...

The guy that is designing it is a perfectionist, he created the first major "space sim" in the 90s, Wing Commander.

They're out of money

They are shooting themselves in the foot.

Rumours from disgruntled employees/anon sources, Escapists already shot themselves in the foot by taking proof from a website with no authentication and saying that they give out employee cards but they don't.

As for Chris house, he's already rich from royalties, ESTIMATE was Nov 14 but people wanted a bigger game.

Truth is we don't know how much money is left and we never will.

Citizencon is this week so we will find out on progress this Saturday

I like how all of the sudden there are a lot of people around here, who have never been seen in this part of the subforum before.

To add to @rentaspoon there are also private investors of at least 17 mio $ we know of. The fist iteration of Star Citizen (the one that was supposed to be out Nov '14) was estimated to cost 19 mio $ and the Kickstarter was just to see if there's a big enough market. Since the continued crowdfunding went so well they decided to up the production value to 100 mio $ so I doubt that they run out of money that fast. This is also the reason why it's delayed this much. They're not even 3 years into a AAA game that has to develop a lot of new game engines in order to work as advertised.

Did you know this forum has an unofficial/official Star Citizen group? Head over to our organization's page, numerous forum threads or our LTTC Discord Server to find out more.

@Paytend01, I suggest you go to robertsspaceindustries.com and have a look for yourself, instead of listening to the misinformation spewed by the naysayers.

In reality, the NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND of us, who have pledged for Star Citizen (the largest crowd funding project, not only in the history of gaming, but in history - period) get to actually play and test every consecutive build in the alpha development of the game. The voice of our community is listened to by the developers, regarding every aspect of features and gameplay. If it gets delayed, it is because we WANT it to be delayed, so that this and that is fixed to our requirements.

Naturally, the resounding success of the SC funding campaign has caught everyone by surprise and there is currently the inevitable backlash by game development conglomerates and jealous competitors, afraid that such a dangerouse precedent may lead to their cozy money-grabbing playground being uncomfortably reshaped by the plebs.  Hence the myriad of accusations coming from "anonymous inside sources" of all kinds of stuff that is quite obviously untrue, when put under the mildest form of scrutiny. However, judging by the people at the beginning of this thread, it has obviously taken more than a few victims.

People looking in from the outside tend to regard the slow development pace as an indicator that the project is failing, while in fact it is booming with over 90 million dollars pledged so far and counting.

This is because they are used to thinking about game development in the classical terms of a giant corporation giving a development studio some money and expecting a finished product that will make their money back with interest (no matter good or bad) by deadline date X. This is completely different. This game is financed by the players and developed to OUR specifications. There is actually very little animosity towards the pace of development within our community. In fact we welcome it, as we are able to see and TEST the results, as we witness the game taking shape bit by bit.

Let the haters hate. If you are into MMOs and Sci-fi, read up for yourself.

How is this many people hating on star citizen? It's perfectly fine and the game is supposed to take years to develop. You people do realize that the other games also take at least three years to develop (and many of them already have a engine to base off of), while Star Citizen is modifying cryengine and adding tons of features.

Developing a game is not as simple as drag and dropping, and some people doesn't seem to appreciate it.

Mainly its about blowing up space ships

and being crew on Spaceships as they get blown up.

But it also has a bunch of stuff like trading, shooting people in the head in spacestation or alien planets, salvaging derelict space wrecks, etc.

If you're worried about their funding just watch their big annual convention livestream on Saturday, when a bunch of sci fi nerds throw their wallets at their computers while holding back enough for the bigger November anniversary sale.

When's it coming out? Don't believe any dates they give for anything. The real answer is when it's done.

Developing a game is not as simple as drag and dropping, and some people doesn't seem to appreciate it.

The difference is that most developers announce they're developing a game in a press release or something, like a year into the concept and design phase - and then are not heard from again until they pop up with a trailer or demo at E3 - 2 - 3 years later, and then release the finished product like a year after that. So the public doesn't really notice the passing of time..

Whereas people are actually watching SC being developed, from the ground up, in real time. And those with little knowledge of game development, naturally feel that something is off - for them game development consists of watching a pretty cut scene on youtube, tweeting about it for a week if they're REALLY excited, and then playing the game a year later. And then there are those like Mr. Derek Smart, who DO have experience but also have an axe to grind so spend their time riling the ignorant crowds up.
