Over 17% Windows 10 users: Steam hardware survey August:

A lot of controversy has surrounded the launch of Windows 10, but two things has gamers intrigued: WDDM 2.0 and DX12. Oh and a free pricetag.

The freshest Steam hardware survey for August 2015 shows a massive increase in Windows 10 users, going past 17% of all steam users. With 16.32% of all steam users now having both Windows 10 and a DX12 supporting GPU. According to steam that leaves just over 47% with a DX12 supporting GPU that is still to upgrade to the newest iteration of Windows.

 

Why should we care?

 

Well Windows 10 introduces a new driver platform called WDDM 2.0, which has a much lower CPU overhead than the older WDDM versions. This means that CPU limited games will experience a performance increase, even in older versions of games. Especially interesting in 1/2 core limited games.

Even more interesting for the gamers are the introduction of DX12, which is a low level API, which makes it possible to utilize your GPU hardware better and introducing new technology like Asynchronous Shaders.

 

This is all interesting as several developers have publicly stated their wish for DX12 as a minimum spec for upcoming games. EA going so far as to wanting it mandatory for all games by 2016 holidays:

For an OS to get over 17% market share in just over 1 month is very impressive. Personally this has been the smoothest upgrade I've ever had with a Windows version (I've used every single consumer Windows since 3.11, so it says a lot).

 

It's going to be interesting how long people are going to stay with Windows 7, which is now 4 generations old, which is equivalent to XP versus Windows 8.

Before i switched to mac, i still insisted on using 8.1 (and i still do using parallels). I prefer it over windows 10 (just add a start menu program) due to providing better compatibility with the applications i use/d.

Just stick to Linux OS and don't use ANY of Google's services. Problem solved.

When you look at it closer, that's 4x more then Linux and Mac combined.

Still having issues with Windows 10, but I finally was able to upgrade to the latest driver from NVIDIA. Safe Mode really comes in handy.

I think Wendell in the tek episode today suggested a good compromise: virtualizing Windows 10 from Linux with full GPU pass-through basically cutting it off from the world if you want to limit telemetry stuff and what not. I don't think my current CPU supports hardware pass through but I can just upgrade if needed.

Ok, so what about the other 83% of Windows users? The ones who have shitty internet, don't trust Windows 10 or don't feel the need to upgrade (using Vista even Windows 7 wasn't really necessary-all of the 'fixes' could have been rolled out through Windows updates).

That is it? Wow also check out r/PCMasterRace and see all the users that can't even launch a steam game because windows 10 either crashes it or has horrible memory leaks

It should've been ready when it launched. There was plenty of testing going on - not just by Microsoft but also by users providing their own feedback. The things that they missed should've have been missed.

I had GTA V not launch, Unturned, Hitman, and many others. So at that point with no SLI and running at 99% memory usage I decided 10 was not the right choice for me and good old windows 7 was home

Still having issues with Windows 10, but I finally was able to upgrade to the latest driver from NVIDIA. Safe Mode really comes in handy.

 

Yeah I heard NVidia is struggling putting out Win10 drivers that are stable. Must be a WDDM 2 thing I guess?

 

I think Wendell in the tek episode today suggested a good compromise: virtualizing Windows 10 from Linux with full GPU pass-through basically cutting it off from the world if you want to limit telemetry stuff and what not. I don't think my current CPU supports hardware pass through but I can just upgrade if needed.

Ok, so what about the other 83% of Windows users? The ones who have shitty internet, don't trust Windows 10 or don't feel the need to upgrade (using Vista even Windows 7 wasn't really necessary-all of the 'fixes' could have been rolled out through Windows updates).

 

This is the steam survey, so only steam users/gamers. So far over 75 million are using Win10, but those numbers must be obsolete by now. As for those people, they are stuck on an obsolete path. For daily use it probably won't matter that much. For gamers it will matter a lot very fast.

The only problem I've had with Windows 10 since I upgraded from 7 was getting my printer to work. All of my games run 10-20 FPS better, I use about 1GB less RAM at idle and my computer starts up about 30 seconds quicker. I have a Radeon card and most of the people I've seen having problems have Nvidia cards.

I realize you may or may not be serious with that remark, but if it didn't have the privacy concerns it would be a great OS and I agree that much at least.
