Oculus Rift Will NOT Be Available on Next Generation Consoles

EChondo

http://www.slashgear.com/oculus-rift-unconvinced-by-xbox-one-and-ps4-vr-potential-12290202/

One of the concerns that we do generally have around consoles is that their life cycles are getting longer all the time. While the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are considered powerful today, they could be seriously out-performed when it comes to VR in the next few years.

Even though we already knew this in some way, I'd just like to give confirmation from CEO Brendan Iribe.

I personally will be getting a Oculus Rift, hopefully at launch, and maybe will be getting a Omni as well :3

So basically, all us PC elitists will have awesome VR to rub in the faces of console gamers for the next 10 years? I don't know why anyone would expect otherwise haha

Not surprising in the least. What's the point in investing in the console industry anymore?

If the market gets what it wants (which it usually does), consoles will be dead within 10 years or so unless they have a rabbit in their hat.

I feel bad for anyone that can't game on all platforms. Console players will miss out on the rift and strictly PC players will miss out on good exclusives. Gotta love having all platforms. The only downside is finding the time to play the games on every platform.

I hope there wasn't someone that was expecting to have full VR on consoles. Like seriously the consoles are already outdated....

Well, over at Sony, Shuhei Yoshida loved it and a lot of Sony fans were kind of hoping that the PS4 will have Oculus Rift support.

I wouldn't be surprised if later down the road(5 years or so), they will have a Oculus Rift, but it will be a dumbed down version for consoles possibly.

guess they should have made better consoles if they "loved it" so much.... or they could just replace consoles every 2-3 years:) (but then consoles would be a PC wouldn't they?)

I disagree with this. I do believe that the Oculus Rift will be coming to consoles. It is just to big to pass up. It might not have the same library of games that pc will have but I can not see Microsoft and Sony missing out on this.

I bet most of the people who want this are mainly PC gamers OR developers that want to code and create things for it that aren't games.

Most of my console friends have never heard of this, only a small amount of console players actually knew of this and I bet a smaller fraction want it.

It could come to consoles, but I doubt it will last long. Oculus Rift could improve and be updated constantly as long as hardware is still improving. I believe they just got finished with 1080p ability and I bet they would love to have the Oculus Rift have 4K abilities soon, but they can't do that with consoles.

Well neither can pc's atm. Because of the 2 screens it would be running dual monitor at 4k so I don't see that happening anytime soon. That's the same as running 8 1080p monitors. The console would probably output it at 720p and it would be upscaled to 1080p. Than the final output would be about the same amount of power to just do it at a single 1080p

If anything the longer the console is on the market the more likely it will be coming to console because of performance tweaks to the game and hardware specs.

Yes, that's the thing. In 5 years PC's could be doing 4K EASILY and CHEAP, the consoles could never do that and I doubt they would want to support a product that is behind when they want to go forward.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I can see it coming to consoles as well, but I bet they won't want to support it.

You can bet they want to be in the console market too. It may have to be dialed back and limited, but it's still an attractive market for a VR company.

Soon as VR takes off, every console maker will be all over it. So it's just a matter of time before we see integration strategies.

this product will easily diminish without support of consoles
sure I love PC and all, but we all know in the back of our heads that consoles are dominate because of their ease of use, because people think that if it's not dedicated for gaming, it's not for gaming, later topic

but a huge part of the gaming industry is consoles, there are reasons that there are more console exclusives than there are PC.

Great, so everybody in the comment section is cheering about "only on PC" thing, but this product will easily become a thing of the past if it isn't relevant, and currently, relevance is determined by popularity, which lies in consoles. I hope they change this and make a console version from a business standpoint, my PC side is saying "YAY F*CK CONSOLES" but if you think of it from a business standpoint, it's a big game of chance, raking in profit or a flop from not enough early adopters
