Where do you draw the line on technology in your life?

BecauseICanTBH
  1. Bank information. Not every single device or item I own need to be a payment method. I'm fine with there being more and more options, but personally I want to retain tight control over my money.
  2. Software in cars. There's so much smart electronics can do for cars, but abuse will be inevitable. If you think ads on a 519€ gaming console dashboard are bad, just wait.
  3. Cloud over local master. Backups are of course great, but I prefer working with local files.
  4. Tracking based pestering. I tolerate sharing various information in order to use various services, but when I get six emails begging me to rate your store after using your loyalty program card, screw you.
  5. Always online/reachable. You're home? You must let us visit unannounced. You must always answer your phone. It says you're online, why don't you reply? (Bonus: Every damn program broadcasting the fact you opened the damn thing.) You need a SIM to boot this smart device. Welcome back, here are 853 updates to block you from doing what you came to do, and here's 359 special ones to stop you from just powering me back down instantly.
  6. Facebook. It has drained so much from the rest of the Internet, and it often does so by just being more convenient (read: Hey! There's a text box I can type into. I'll use this FOR EVERYTHING!), instead of offering a better platform for the content.

I have no use for smart home things (light bulbs, appliances, etc.). Maybe where I'd draw a line is tech in cars. When I'm driving I want to have full control over my car (I don't mind ABS, but other safety things and tech are useless) and no touchscreens in it. The most modern thing in my car is the radio - what I want from it is to be able to randomly play mp3s from a USB stick or memory card (that's it, no bluetooth or anything). Also no driverless cars. I can just let go of the steering wheel of my car and it will go whereever it wants, who needs technology to control it /s

I have no need for a smartwatch. My current watch is just fine (pic from internet below). The main thing I don't like about smartwatches is that you have to charge them every couple of days while regular ones last years with one battery.

45555519.casio-bem-100d.jpg

While 4G speed is plenty for me, I don't mind 5G, but I don't want a smartphone with a screen bigger than 4.7", that's the perfect size for me.

Implants? Like becoming something like the Terminator? Well if I had to choose to die or get some implant, I'd choose the implant. Otherwise I'm fine with what and who I am.

Also I don't want to pay with anything other than real cash.

While I may change the way I think about paying in cash only and the phone size limit (in the far future), I'm not going to change the way I think about the other things.

Me personally? I don't care about 5G or VR and AR, or really anything you mentioned. For me, mainly smart doorbells and secret webcams, like Nest and stuff. I hate it, and it actually intrudes on my privacy rights, especially those hidden cameras in AirBNBs some people have.

I don't have many lines; most things you mentioned I don't care about or don't use because they suck in their current form (Why dose 5G matter when the data prices for cellular are stupid high, VR still sucks and cost way too much, ext...) . That being said I am all for human embedded cybernetics as long as they are stand alone devices that are not DRM ridden spyware; because the constant tracking is where I draw the line.

Because at least in the US, 20% of the population or so lives in areas not served by Fiber or Cable operators. When your options are expensive 3 Mbps DSL, Satellite or cellular, 5G starts looking really good.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

If you read, you would known I said 20% live in Rural areas. I didn't say every where in the US had shit internet. But those are the people looking forward to 5G. Because those are the ones who are likely to use it the most.

I did read, I just attempted and failed a joke/meme. ?

Edit: Horribly I might add.

At this point, it's no secret that technology is going to keep advancing to the extremes in all fields. Pretty soon, people will be getting implants in their brains and whatnot. All sorts of sci-fi stuff is about to become a reality.

My question is, where do you draw the line? Where do you, personally, stop and say "this is enough tech for me"?

What about you?

Too far, hmmm...Full Borg assimilation or loss of individuality. After a bodily death, connect my brain up to VR, I'm cool with that! :)

  • 5G: I'm honestly not deeply concerned by the potential long-term effects of 5G. Various scientists have been warning of the cancer risks regarding wireless communications since the 70's, and many have got it wrong so far (including Bill Curry, who claimed that WiFi would give you cancer back in 2000.)  Part of the problem with his research is that it was done on exposed tissue cells, negating the fact that your skin serves as a sufficient barrier against high-frequency radio communications. (At least that's as far as I understand it.)
  • VR/AR: Depends on how far it goes. I have an Oculus Rift and I do quite enjoy playing games with it, however I wouldn't personally take it farther. It's a neat piece of technology but I don't believe it has the ability to enhance my life.
  • Network connected home appliances, lighting, surveillance, door locks, etc.: I would buy Bluetooth/WiFi-controlled light bulbs, but I'd go no farther at all. Network connected appliances are just downright stupid, and network-connected door locks and security cameras are just asking to be hacked into.
  • Home assistant speakers and the likes, such as Alexa/Google Home: I have an Echo Dot, though most of the time I keep it unplugged. I stopped using it after I heard about how it was being used to solve crimes and such. I'm not saying I'm committing crimes, but it is very telling of how intrusive the technology can be.
  • Implants: We agree completely on this one.

Additionally, Google Glass and implants remind me of the eyephone from Futurama.

For me:

  • 5g. I'll probably never get a phone that is even hardware-capable of 5g. I don't want that around me.
  • VR/AR. Too disconnected from real life. Unnecessary and intrusive to the mind. That includes smart glasses. Virtual tours like Google Street View is my limit for that type.
  • Network connected home appliances, lighting, surveillance, door locks, etc. I demand full, analog control over that type of stuff, and wouldn't expose things in my home to potential hacking. I won't buy anything like that if it has the hardware for wifi/bluetooth connectivity. I'm all for robotics making my life easier (robot vacuums, lawn mowers, etc), but not if they're connected to the internet.
  • Home assistant speakers and the likes, such as Alexa/Google Home.
  • Implants. I'd have to be out of my damn mind.

What about you?

I agree with most of your list.

5G: I will wait and see their benefit and if the frequency band they are using is actually harmful.

VR/AR: I am open to some games as long as they can be made more affordable and no motion sickness. But won't use them as daily things.

Smart home staff: I fully agree. No internet connections that those appliances.

Home assistant: I am just astonished that ppl will buy things that will listen to them every single second and send it out to internet.

Implants: I am happy to replace my malfunctioning joints when I get old. But thats about it.

I don't draw the line. I snort it, meaning Im good with tech evolving and following along and embracing it. I don't have alexa and google home right now cause I don't see what I would do with it. I don't have VR cause I find it a bit too expensive right now, etc.

Im hoping to see cyber implants before I die. I wish I could replace a few broken pieces right now but its not here :P
